Mostly Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. Each serves a different purpose, but Instagram is probably the most useful for visual content and discovering new trends.

Good to see this thread revived — the answer in 2026 looks quite different from 2018. For UK small businesses, I'd say it comes down to where your customers actually are rather than trying to be on every platform:

LinkedIn is still the standout for B2B. Decision-makers are on there daily, and a couple of thoughtful posts a week beats daily filler.

TikTok and Instagram Reels have become genuine discovery engines for consumer businesses. Lots of local shops and tradespeople getting found through short video now.

YouTube is still underrated: videos rank in Google search and keep working for you long after you post them, unlike a feed post that disappears within a couple of days.

WhatsApp communities or broadcast lists are quietly effective for repeat business — reminders, offers, new stock updates.

The biggest mistake I see is businesses spreading themselves too thin across six platforms. Pick two at most, post consistently, and track actual enquiries rather than follower counts — that's the number that matters.

Also worth remembering: for local businesses, a well-kept Google Business Profile arguably does more heavy lifting than any social channel, since that's what people see when they search.
