How to get money back if job not done correctly

I recently too much vehicle for its gearbox repairing and was told that it would be £250 straight away for them to take it apart and find the fault and then repair which could be in the region of between £600-£1000 total including the £250 initial cost. I agreed and they took the gearbox off and took it apart and then rang and said it needed a new 4th and 5th gear and something else and that the cost in total to repair was £1070 to which he agreed to £1000 for cash. I was happy to pay that to get my van sorted. Once they put it back together the rattle was still there meaning it wasn’t fixed and he tried to say it needed a new clutch to which I told him it had just had a brand new one fitted a few weeks before so he then had to take it all back off again. He then rang and said that it need some sort of new casing which is very unheard of and would easily have been seen the first time he took it apart and said he had found one for £505 plus vat so that would make my bill £1600 to which I refused to pay as a price was already agreed and showed he hadn’t done his job. I didn’t collect the van as I said it needed sorting and he said he thought he had found a way around the problem. A few days later he called to say it was fixed. When arriving at the garage I noticed a couple of dents extra on my back door and it also had one of my VW wheel trims missing which my wife later found quite a long way from the garage so it must have been taken out for a drive at some point. I then paid him the £1000 and set off home to get into 5th gear to find it was rattling again so I turned round and took it back....I took the man with me on a test drive so he could hear it too and he wasn’t happy but I refused to take the van until it was fixed properly.....he then called me almost a week later and said it was ready .....it still had a vibration and I questioned this and he told me that the vibration was the engine Mount and not the gearbox and to just get it changed so I have even though I knew there was nothing wrong with it and the problem is still there....I contacted the garage and he ignored my calls then eventually after lots of calls he finally called back and said there’s nothing he could do! I’ve asked for a refund so I can’t take it somewhere else and get the gearbox fixed properly and he refused so I said I would bring the van back for him to fix properly and he says he won’t complete anymore work on it .....what can I do and how can I get my money back....I need my van for work as I’m a joiner but now can’t use it and can’t afford to get it fixed elsewhere :-/

I suspect you are screwed. You paid in cash? Did you get a receipt?

The reality is you can possibly get some money back if you are willing to spend quite a bit more time, money and agro (if you have a receipt). Can you commit to get someone else to diagnose the issue and 2) check whether the work the other guys did was actually done? With no receipt...this is simply a life lesson. with a receipt it is still a battle, because there was no guarantee....to think about every time i messed up at my day job. Imagine if they didnt pay me for those days!

I do have a receipt yes.....I’m a business woman so not stupid enough to not get a receipt....I’ve now taken the matter up with trading standards and consumer rights

Good luck, I hope it works out. They will probably say something like there is no guarantee that they diagnosed it properly etc, but I hope not. ...Just to confirm, the mechanic gave you a proper receipt saying company name, company number, work done and amount with paid on it? As that completely defeats the purpose of cash in hand. Id take that receipt to HMRC and say they are dodging VAT, corporation tax and probably NI too. I suspect they will get a way bigger penalty from HMRC than trading standards.

From my point of view, the solution that you told us is evident and might work. But, I decided not to waste my time with all these things. I only complicate it with all the processes I might do. That's why I decided to give up and to start living a free life. I've always wanted to have fun in casinos, but they closed all the casinos with this pandemic situation. Instead, I started using online casino platforms from https://www.casinosnotongamstop.online. There is only the best platform nowadays. It's an excellent method to relieve stress.

The reality is that you may be able to get some money back if you are willing to put in a lot more time, money, and effort (if you have a receipt).

I know that you can get your money back if you have signed a contract or started to work with a person through a freelance platform. So you can try and get them back except for the casino issues :)) There you just need t pick a good casino and then play.
