Wikipedia.....as a marketing/business tool

I have often wondered about Wikipedia as marketing/business tool.

Does it help in any way with the mighty Google's ranking.

Often when I am searching on the web for a company or a piece of information, the Wikipedia page is more often than not near the top of the listing?

Is is therefore worthwhile companies putting a Wikipedia page up?

They do have rules for that yes, it's covered under something they call notability. You can ready about it it here -> Wikipedia:Notability - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Regarding traffic we have had several of out sites linked to naturally from wiki and it does provide significant traffic.

Well I am sure if it such a good method for ranking or driving traffic (the techies can confirm),then why not have an SBF page.

I would say that the remit of the SBF is to support/network with business throughout Scotland....surely Wikipedia would not object to that?

Anyway; what I was saying is that SBF certainly seems credible in this sense; it's a very positive thing...

Whereas I can fully understand the rantings of a largely delusional, militantly political attention-seeker (i.e. the lady to whom I referred earlier) being removed....

So yes; it sounds like a good move..

I've got a couple of pages linked from Wikipedia. It certainly generates a respectable amount of traffic. On one of the pages in question, around half the visitors that arrive via a link do so from Wikipedia.

Presumably such links also increase your link popularity, and therefore your search engine rankings.

Well it seems as if this might be a really nice way of getting some additional traffic to SBF. I'm gonna spend a bit of time finding out exactly how Wikipedia works and if we can get such a page created. Some sort of collaborative one would be fantastic

If it does get through the guideline, which I think it does meet the criteria....It's a service which assists all Scottish Businesses.

I can't see any reason why an article couldn't be written about SBF that meets the Wikipedia guidelines. The main thing is to avoid blatant self-promotion.

Perhaps look for existing Wikipedia articles about other on-line meeting places to see how they approach it.

Well, working out why something might not work is often the best way of making sure it DOES work....

What, in your experience Terry, might be the problems that we would have to overcome?

This could be a very long conversation but I will try to keep it brief and concise. Understanding what should and should not go into wiki could be explained using tens of thousands of words. (Please refer to the notability article I posted earlier. It's just one of dozens of articles on wiki about what should be added to the website and will bore you to death). There is a lot of arguing, even amongs moderators, about what is a valid entry. My personal view is that adding sbf at this stage will mean a definite deletion as there isn't sufficient sources (which you need) as well as not enough to say about sbf (at the moment).

I've been adding editing and deleting stuff from Wiki for a long time and there are very few forums on Wikipedia. Search the site for forums and you will see. The ones that are in it tend to be connected to massive communities and have millions of members (the others are probably article stubs or pending deletion for not adhering to the guidelines).

Sorry for sounding too negative, I just don't think it's something worth considering at the moment. I may be wrong, certainly don't take what I say as Gospel.
