There are four main types worth knowing about:

  • On-page: titles, meta descriptions, headings, and page content. Each page should target one clear topic and answer what someone would actually search for.
  • Technical: site speed, mobile layout, HTTPS, crawlability, and fixing broken links. Google Search Console (free) flags most of these.
  • Off-page: links from other sites, mentions, and reviews. Quality beats volume every time, and buying links is a quick way to get penalised.
  • Local: if you serve a specific area, a properly filled-out Google Business Profile with genuine reviews often does more than anything else.

For a small UK business, local and on-page tend to give the fastest wins. Technical fixes are a one-off job that stops the other work being wasted. Off-page is the slow burn and the hardest to control, so treat it as ongoing rather than a one-time push.

The four types above cover the theory well. If I were starting from scratch on a small business site, I'd sequence it like this over the first 90 days:

1. Google Business Profile — claim it, fill every field properly, add real photos, and start a routine of asking happy customers for reviews. For a local business this usually moves the needle fastest.

2. Site foundations — check the site loads quickly on a phone, every page is HTTPS, and fix any broken links. Google Search Console is free and flags most of this for you.

3. Content that matches intent — give each service its own page with a clear heading, and if you serve several towns, a genuinely useful page for each one with local detail. Then answer one question your customers ask before buying as an article each month — cost guides, how-to-choose pieces.

4. Reviews and mentions — treat off-page as the slow burn. Don't buy links. Steady genuine reviews and accurate listings do more over time.

The order matters: there's little point chasing links to pages that don't convert or a profile that's half-empty.
