UK small-business owners: how do you actually deal with cybersecurity?

’m doing some research into how UK SMEs manage cybersecurity when they don’t have a dedicated security team.

I’m particularly interested in things like:

  • What part of cybersecurity is genuinely difficult for your business?
  • Do security tools give you useful actions, or mostly more alerts/information?
  • How do you know what needs fixing first?
  • Is the main barrier cost, time, expertise, complexity, trust, or something else?
  • Would clearer prioritised recommendations actually be useful?

I’m looking for genuine views, including negative ones. I’m not trying to prove that businesses need a particular product, and there’s no sales call required afterwards.

If you’re a UK business owner, director, manager, or the person who somehow became “the IT/security person” in a small company, I’d really appreciate your input.

Happy to also discuss the topic in the comments.

Honest view from the small-firm side: the hard part isn't the technology, it's the gap between what a tool reports and what a busy owner does next. Most products generate dozens of alerts a week; very few say "fix these two things first, here's why, it takes ten minutes." So alerts get muted and nothing changes.

Prioritising tends to come down to gut feel plus whatever a client's supplier questionnaire or the cyber insurer is asking about this month. Cyber Essentials (the NCSC-backed scheme, found via the NCSC site) is the closest thing most small firms have to a proper checklist, and it forces the basics: MFA, patching, removing admin rights, tested backups.

Main barrier is time, then trust. Cost is manageable; working out which vendor is being straight with you isn't. Ranked, plain-English recommendations with effort estimates would be genuinely useful, provided they're not a disguised upsell.
