This 3 minute 46 second film will not make more money or run you business better. I have just posted so maybe you can think of the commitment required!

If you can risk and commit at this level in business maybe something will happen;)

The film is at river levels never seen before

Well actually, if anyone's thinking about using video in their business this film could well help you make more money and run your business better...

I'll draw a line at suggesting that helicopters and exotic locations are an essential... Or even that the subject matter should necessarily be so glamorous and exciting...

But in terms of the photography, editing and narrative construction this is actually the standard people should be aiming for in their business videos. As a promo it rather kicks all those half-assed movies into touch... This promo has just sold me a DVD on a subject in which I've virtually no interest and of which I've virtually no knowledge...

Afraid helicopters and exotic locations are needed otherwise I would have to stay in Scotland all year:thumbup:

Only posted it as I have never seen that volume on the river before and they ran rapid number 9 with we do not do with clients risk is to high.

We have the challenging issue that a lot of the places we go if you want to film you need film people who can cope with kayaking at the very top level and be able to film at the same time.

Of course you can do the chopper thing all the time but those things use up money like it is going out of fashion.

Actually, much of what I'm seeing on that clip at river level is done with fixed cameras... That and little 'hovercams' which, whilst not cheap, are far less cash-hungry and more flexible than full size helicopters...

I wouldn't put a cameraman into a situation like that; there's just really no need to; anymore than there's any need for a cameraman to be in an F1 car or sitting on the wing of the Space Shuttle....

Nobody except an enthusiast would be particularly impressed by this were it not for the fact it's well shot, well paced, there's a strong narrative and it's nicely cut together; it does what videos are supposed to do and draws the audience in....

Here's a trailer for a DVD I didn't buy :001_unsure: ...

YouTube - Glasgow Buses 2007 PMP DVD 1484

And yes; that REALLY is a trailer for a commercially released DVD! :001_rolleyes:

Just as a bus spotter (yes they DO exist :confused1: don't ask me why!) might go wild at the mere sight of some rare vehicle....:confused1::confused1: It takes a 'James May' and some clever story telling to actually engage an audience and start drawing them into what makes this anymore than a clonky old bus.... Or a paddle down a stroppy looking river....

It's a bit like people's wedding videos! Folk assume you're interested in seeing the biggest day of their lives... And should be fascinated by all the little things about the event that mean something to them... But the truth is most people sit through these things in politely restrained agony!

Whether you're half way up the Molenaars or in a Portakabin next to the Molendinar good lighting, good sound, a decent narrative and good editing are what will really mitigate the risks involved in having a video made. And in a LOT of cases there really ARE serious risks to businesses when they indulge in the usual DIY disaster movies you see on YouTube...

No doubting the video is superb. It also does a very good job of getting a few messages across that I think Peter aluded to in his initial post.

I think in every book i've read about entrepreneurs they all had this unwavering confidence in their own ability to the point that in their own eyes this reduced the perceived risk. I think in business you do need to be brave and be committed to what you are trying to achieve.

I'm a big fan of the beermat books and I think they do a really good job of showing how in initial parts of a business need to develop. Out and out entrepreneurs needs to be backed up by a strong team who collectively have the skills to run the business. That's kind of the basis on how I hope to build things going forward.

Thanks for posting the video Peter :)

Absolutely....

JUST watch the first 45 seconds in isolation.... Nothing overly tricky about it; just superb construction... And the very simple statement the V/O makes...

The pieces to camera later on are very nice too; all 'lit' with just reflectors and existing light if I'm not mistaken...

I'll second 's thanks for posting the video Peter.... It's a lovely piece of cinematography, and yes, makes the points you highlight well...:thumbup1:
