Need some HR advice

I only have two employees now but over the past few months i've been having a few issues that I now think I need to resolve. I dont want to suddenly be facing tribunals etc so I want to make sure things are done properly.

Is it best to consult an HR lawyer or use one of these legal helpline type things. Any advice would be appreciated.

In my experience legal advice is almost always best got from a specialist. But I'd maybe run it past the family solicitor first. They may be able to give you some 'ball park' advice and recommend someone.

Maybe if you expand a little on the issues someone here could help?

I would agree with Alison that ACAS would be a good first port of call. I think I would say it's important you tread carefully as employment law is very complex. I must try and get an HR expert to join up and contribute to the forums :)

David, go with what Alison said :)

Employing someone should be a standard procedure, and as such, the procedures should be published quite publicly.

Therefore, following the guidance should ensure you do what's needed and when :) Contracts are a must with all employees to make sure you both understand what is expected of them.

Sorry for not replying sooner, been away for a few days. Thanks for the link to ACAS that was really helpful. The main culprit has now left (nothing to do with me!) and things seem to have settled back down again. Will certainly keep a note of ACAS for future reference.

HI Dave

Are you a member of the FSB, if not then I would suggest you join quite pronto. As their membership, which is not expensive, includes full cover for any fees and awards payable under employment disputes.

As someone who has been taken through this mill twice, I would thoroughly recommend it. Because, these things have a nasty habbit of biting back about 2 months and 28 days later!!!
