How do you balance organic growth and paid ads when building brand visibility?

I’m curious how others approach this. Do you focus on one strategy first or try to develop both at the same time? Interested to hear what actually worked for you in practice, especially for small or mid-sized businesses.

Depends on budget restraints, it's nearly always better to be doing as many avenues of traffic generation as possible when brand building, there is clear correlations of sentiments when running paid ads alongside organic growth.

Do you want brand recognition or do you want to sell more stuff?

The first is great if you have lots of cash and your name will attract more business (eg Tesco) but if you are selling cheap socks on ebay your brand is irrelevant.

So the answer as always is: it depends.

For me, starting with organic worked best, especially on social media and the blog. Only after getting steady traffic did I invest in ads to amplify what was already working.

I think it’s better to focus on one strategy first, get it working well, and then build on it. Small businesses usually have limited time and budgets, so trying to do everything at once can be overwhelming. Once you start seeing results, it becomes easier to invest in other channels.

I'd treat paid ads as a testing tool for the organic side rather than a separate plan. Run a small budget on a handful of search terms that match what you sell, and look at which ones actually produce enquiries, not just clicks. Then build proper pages or articles around the terms that convert, so you stop paying for them forever. Meanwhile organic gives you the slow trust building, and the ads fill the gap while it grows. A rough split that works for many small firms is most of the effort on content and local visibility, with a modest ad budget you can switch off any month. Track branded searches too. If more people search your business name after seeing ads, your brand work is paying off.
