Do UK employers use ATS systems for apprenticeship applications?

Hi everyone,

I’m interested in how UK small businesses manage apprenticeship and entry-level job applications.

Many larger employers use applicant tracking systems to review CVs before a recruiter sees them, but I’m not sure how common this is among smaller businesses. This can be difficult for applicants because a suitable candidate may be overlooked when their CV has an unusual layout or does not clearly match the job description.

I’m currently working on a resume review tool called ATS Checker, so I’m particularly interested in hearing from business owners and applicants.

Do small businesses here use ATS software when recruiting apprentices or junior employees, or do you normally review every application manually?

I’d appreciate hearing about your experience.

Yes, but it’s patchy. Most UK small businesses (say under 50 staff) hiring apprentices/juniors don’t run a “proper” ATS like larger corporates. They’re more likely to use email, Indeed, LinkedIn, or an apprenticeship training provider’s portal, then skim CVs manually.

Where “ATS-like” filtering happens in small firms is usually via the job board or platform they post on (auto-sorting, knock-out questions, keyword search),or through outsourced HR/recruitment agencies who do use an ATS.

For apprenticeships, many SMEs lean on their training provider to pre-screen candidates. If building an ATS Checker, focus on compatibility with Indeed/LinkedIn parsing and simple formatting (clear headings, dates, job titles, no text boxes).
