Software company, best way to get new Clients without portfolio?

Hi,

My name is Lucas and I'm co-founder and software developer of software development company offering bespoke solutions.

With over 4 years of commercial experience in developing software I have decided to create my own company with my friend.

All software applications I have created in the last few years was build internally and here my problem arise. I cant really share anything in my portfolio as this will break the law so my portfolio is basically empty.

Is there any other way to get new Clients without portfolio?

Hi Lucas, I've been in software development as a senior manager for almost 30 years so I understand your problem. The most successful people in this area I've come across go back to their initial companies because they have the knowledge and relationships. You can work with them on solving a problem. I know a guy who built a successful software development company and he used to be a Civil Engineer at Network Rail. He understood the issue and learned IT. It's all about knowing the business issues and having the relationships

Why not? After 4 years you will have a load of experience and likely trusted if you were a good employee. I'd go armed with a high level proposition and then go armed with a set of questions. What you really want is to have a clear Problem / Opportunity statement. Let's say you know how the systems are integrated and they are poor in some critical areas, you may have a statement that looks like "I can solve this problem for you in this way and you will benefit you by ........"
