Hi All

Just interested to hear if anyone has tried Windows Server 2008 - Foundation yet.

For those who don't know what it is, it is cut down version of Server 2008 although it will still function as a DC with all the usual services you'd expect from a server. And at around £190 it looks good.

Obviously things like Hyper V Virtualisation are omitted but unless small businesses need multiple servers then this should't be an issue.

Would like to hear your views

Regards

Hi Lanarkshire IT

I have had a look at the OS but not installed or played with it, the only problem with the OS that because it's targeted at small businesses, Windows Server Foundation supports a maximum of 15 concurrent users. It runs only on single-socket systems and can access a maximum of 8GB of RAM.

I suppose the good point about this OS is that it cheap compaired to the full versions of server 2008.

Yep

All those points are true and can be pro or con depending on the business requirements of redundancy / performance etc.

I think the 15 free CALs is ideal for small businesses wishing to move from a workgroup scenario to a client / server setup.

Gonna test it and see how it goes.

The other good thing i like about this new product is that you can upgrade to another version of the 2008 server family, unlilke SBS were you have to buy the transition pack to upgrade to a full version of server 2003 or 2008.

Makes life a lot easyer when upgrading.

I have to say, I'm reasonably impressed with it. I haven't done a lot of research on it just because of time constraints, but the scalability of it (as Darren has already said) looks pretty promising for SME's.

In addition, you can't really go wrong with things like this: Cheap Laptops, Hard Drives, LCD Monitors, TVs, Televisions and more at Ebuyer.com

Yep

I've rollout out a couple of those bundles already. Great deal for the price / what you get etc.

It was that bundle that inspired me to investigate this OS further. Just a few redundancy mods and your good to go.

Be interesting to see what happens with the 15 CALs when you upgrade to full Server 2008. Server 2008 coming with 5.

Bearing in mind these are USER CALS ONLY with Foundation.

Or will the price reflect this? Hopefully NOT making it more than what Standard Edition 2008 would cost in the first place.

I suppose a clear idea of forecasted business growth would help.

Regards
