On another thread I made this quote....

"...If you do what everyone else is doing, you'll get what everyone else is getting..."

Sadly I don't where it originated from....but it got me thinking deeper about how we market ourselve and our businesses.

Imagine a shoal of fish if you will....and swimming in one direction....but there is one fish that isn't....it's out there doing it own thing.....swimming on the opposite direction.

In business we have to be different to get noticed. We all run businesses for which there will be competitors all vying for the same business. How do you make yourself different to get noticed.

I see a phrase a lot used in website and marketing materials and that phrase is "Why We Are Different"....of course as soon as you use it, you are not unique because everyone else is using it too.

If you also look at marketing materials, there is never a lot of thought as too what goes into them, so they all look the same as each other, offering the same services and therefore the same results.

Testimonials are another area that people think they have great techniques....a lot of testimonials are usually just saying what a great company you have....but the truth is stark....people will respond better to testimonials that have results in the...."I got 20K worth of Business" "My profit margin rocketed 200%" that type of thing....but rarely do you see it. I personally throw a lot of the testimonials away that are given to me. or I go back to the person and ask them to rewrite it, pointing out any results they got as a result of using out services.

Or if you competitors start to drop their prices because the market looks as though it collapsing, lot so similar businesses do the same thing, but all it makes them look is very hungry...and customers can smell the fear.

I have done some things recently which went against the flow in terms of marketing our Christmas event...and what I can tell you is that is that I got dramtic results directly from being different.

Firslty I sent out an email for the event using a silly little ElfYourself weblink on it and again, none of my competitors did. But that one email netted me 50% of the people who will be attending this event. I had also put my prices up...again my competition is cutting theirs. The next thing I did was just pump out email after email this week (again your competitors would be scare to do this) and the result was I have filled the event up. The point about doing that, was it kept our company name in their minds, during a week in which competitors would have just been sending out one email in the hope of a massive response.

So my message through this thread is this....stand out, do something different from the competition and you will get noticed. You have to get noticed to get business, because if your competitors are struggling because of the way they market then if you do it their way, you'll struggle too.
