Hey folks! I’ve been thinking about getting into online business, but I’m still trying to figure out which direction makes the most sense. There are SO many options out there now and it’s honestly hard to tell what’s actually a legit business model and what’s just another “passive income” hype!
I want to keep everything legit. I’m definitely not looking for some get rich quick thing. I also have some money set aside to invest, so I’m not expecting to start a serious business with $0.
What I’m really stuck on is whether I should build everything from scratch or use a platform that already handles a lot of the setup, like Payhip, Woo Commerce, Ecomzy and many others.

I think the platform vs. building from scratch decision really depends on what you’re trying to sell. I’d probably start with an established platform rather than spending months building the technical side. That lets you test whether there’s actually demand before investing heavily. Once the business proves itself, you can always move to a more custom setup later.

From a UK perspective, I’d focus less on whether you build from scratch or use a platform, and more on what you’re actually trying to sell and how much control you’ll need as you grow.

For example, if you’re selling digital products, a platform that handles payments, delivery and basic storefront functionality can make sense when you’re testing demand. If you’re building a more established ecommerce business, something like WooCommerce can give you considerably more control over the website, customer experience and integrations, although you’ll have more responsibility for hosting, security and maintenance.

Beyond platform fees, I’d look at:

• Payment processing costs and how easily you can withdraw funds
• UK VAT and how the platform handles VAT-related requirements
