Before I get completely out of control with the amazing technology, lets just make sure we're aware of what a VPS actually is.

You pay a monthly fee (like hosting) and you get a slab of a dedicated server to yourself. Your own operating system is installed, and you have full administrative privileges on that area.

Click here: Fluffy VPS Cloud ? | The Virtual Private Server VPS Cloud | UK / USA for further details about a VPS :)

Ok... here we go.

The VPS Cloud thing works a bit different!
(You can skip my babble and just go straight to their info here: Fluffy VPS Cloud ? | The Virtual Private Server VPS Cloud | UK / USA)

Loads and loads and loads of servers all come together to act as dynamic VPS!

What's so cool about that I hear you say?

Well:
When you need more hard disk space, instead of having to re-partition the disk of your old VPS (or even get the technician to turn it off to install a bigger one),you log on to the control panel, and simply CLICK!

As soon as you do, hard drive space is allocated to your VPS! (And UK2 claim they're not going to oversell as well!)

What about when you need more RAM? CLICK!

More processors? CLICK! :001_tt1:

As if that wasn't enough... here's where I really get excited:
If you know what RAID is then this analogy is going to be easy for you.

Lets say your VPS dies. Bang, thats you offline until a technician can get down to your server to fix whatever it is. If it's a dead hard drive then you're stuffed. If it's a power supply, expect to wait at least 20 minutes for them to fish a new one out.

But with this Cloud... it utilises the same idea as RAID - keeping backups and data scattered across all the servers in the cabinets. Why is this good?

SELF HEALING!

In less than 60 seconds, your entire VPS server has found all the data and merged it all back together again and is now back online.

MMm!

Is this the future then Stu?

I can see the benefits of it but won't they have to build in some kind of backup in case everyone raids their space and a lot of them go tits up at once?

The scale of this system is that the entire thing is the backup. If fifty accounts all go tits up, then fifty accounts all get rescued :D

This is most definitely the future.

The Cloud is the way to go - get on the bandwagon now! It's about to leave.

I haven't asked yet Gordon. I might just do that to have a play!

If things are as good as they claim, I suspect a lot of corporates will consider ditching a lot of their expensive hardware in favour of this method.

that's pretty impressive like stu. i wonder what the costs are for implementing that not only in the hardware sense, but the software to control it would probably have to be quite sophisticated.

I can sense you drooling slightly :w00t:

are you thinking about joining the beta programme

its a very sexy idea ;)

I tried registering for the Beta just to be nosey, but they are only using 50 people and they already have them! :(

Well, ignoring the fact each "node" or whatever is going to have 32GB of RAM each! Lets go a bit further back from that technology and look at the switches.

Each Cisco Catalyst 4948 10GE comes in with a price tag of around £23K. UK2 are buying in bulk :)

They've taken on well over 50 people for their beta programme now... but I might just have to sneak in to see what all the fuss is about - who am I kidding, I know exactly what all the fuss is about and I want in!!!!
