In this article on the BEEB....locals are objecting to Tesco's expanding one of their stores in Norfolk.

It has long been a bone of contention that Tesco have been too dominant in the market place. But during these tough time should they be encourage to expand and create job and therefore inputting to the ecomony even more?

BBC NEWS | England | Norfolk | Tesco expansion faces opposition

Or as the locals are saying in it...local businesses would suffer. Is a case of doing things for the greater good of the masses?

I certainly think these things should be at least questioned...

Tesco claim to be creating 90 jobs. But what quality of jobs? Transient low paid unskilled jobs are no substitute for the career of even the humblest of shopkeepers. What's more the transplanting of (say) a butcher from independent shop to superstore has a knock-on effect on all the interdependent trades that service that business....

Our High Streets are the poorer for what has happened in retail over the past 25 years. Quality and choice are much reduced. And too often communities are over dependent on a single employer both as supplier and employer.

None of this is really in the greater interest.

I've become more conscious over the past six months ago just how much little local businesses rely on you and me. This year we sourced our entire Xmas dinner locally using local butchers and farmers etc. It tasted much better and wasn't much more expensive.

I dont like when they come out and claim just how many jobs they are creating without any consderation for what also gets lost, not just in terms of jobs but what the community loses as well. These stores are hardly at the heart of any communities are they!

I think it's right these are questioned and Tesco is indeed a massive global company now. I agree with Matt there is much less choice now but it's all fine and well people complaining about it what they really need to do is to continue to support their local businesses and hurt Tesco in the worst place possible.... their pocket. I wouldn't think these big stores stick around if it's not viable. But when they come with their 20p bread and their ample car parking etc how many people will actually stand up and support the local businesses.
