sales tax?

Does Scotland add a sales tax to goods when they are purchased by a consumer? If so what is the amount or is it determined locally, such as city by city?

Value added Tax (VAT for short) is applied across the UK at 17.5%. There are some exceptions such as energy at 5% and a range of others that are zero rated.

As much as vat is applied to most things from the consumer perspective they very rarely see it. Prices over here aren't quotes as X plus sales tax. There are certain situations where a consumer is aware of it but it's probably far more relevant to businesses.
