I've just been forwarded the email below by a very trusted contact which makes some very interesting reading. I am assured it's genuine so if anyone has success in getting something back I want 10% :p (Only Kidding!)

, you may want to post this in your forum - its a genuine opportunity for many people to receive a tax rebate (i've called the IR and checked it out) - final deadline for claims is 31/1/09.

The year before tax credits were introduced there was a different non means tested allowance available which was never advertised by the Inland Revenue so you probably didn't know it existed. It is called the Children's tax allowance 2002/03

You can still claim this £520 allowance before 31st January if

You have a child born between 6 April 1986 and 5 April 2003
The child has lived with you for all or part of 2002/3
You worked and paid tax for all or part of 2002/3
You or your partner earned more than £6000 in the year 2002/3
Upper earnings limit is £42k
You can claim £1040 if

You can answer yes to the four questions above
One of your children was born between 6 April 2002 and 5 April 2003

Have your NI number ready. Phone HMRC on 0845 300 3949 and ask them to check whether you ( or your partner if appropriate) have already received this allowance and if not you will be advised to download CTC11 from the website and send it in. It is as easy as that. You may be eligible for a cheque for one of the amounts.

You can't claim twice and if your final tax code on your April 2003 P 60 ended in H or T you have already had the allowance.

If you submitted a Self Assessment Form that year you automatically got the benfit

Your marital status is irrelevant

Claiming does not affect current or future entitlement to Working or Child Tax Credit

It could make a nice little windfall after Christmas :)

A link to download the 11CTC form.

We owe you a drink . Thank you very much for a useful thread, we never got this from the HMRC. :thumbup1:

Funny when we spoke to the IR that we could have claimed for the previous year but had missed the deadline for it because they failed to inform everyone that could actually claim it back.

They're very methodical at getting their tax money in however, arent they?..:sneaky2:

Well i'm glad it helped Alex. I'm not sure how many millions remain unclaimed but HMRC certainly dont appear to be doing too much to refund it :(

I would also urge others to please check this out. THIS IS NOT A SCAM!

I can re-inforce its not a scam, as AVS Agencies are bogged down at the moment with claiming this back for anyone who either doesnt have the time to or is wary of doing it themselves.

We feel though that the deadline might be argued about and stretched to March 09 as there are arguments afoot that whilst the self employed would normally have tax return deadlines of end of January the actual tax year runs until end March so for Jo Public the rule about 5 years to claim back is then. However, we are still arguing this point with HMRC so watch this space!

However, offfically its 16 days to go!

Apologies for bumping such an old thread. We never received a penny from this even though I was told on the telephone that I was eligible when I made our enquiry on the 15th of January. Cant even get through on the telephone today to complain. :cursing:

If you have not received any communication from HMRC then your claim is still outstanding.

We have nearly half of all our claims still awaiting a decision by HMRC and chasing them to the tax offices, will merely get you a 'its being dealt with, we have a backlog' answer unfortunately.
