Potential HMRC scam

Hi All,

Received a heads up about the following scam that seems to be going round. Someone pretending to be HMRC and advising you're due a tax rebate and require you to fill in a form. The form just happens to have a section for you to complete your debit / credit card details.

The correspondence is as follows;-

If you are not the intended recipient of this email, please reply toinform us that you have received this email in error and then delete itwithout retaining any copy. I have taken the dots out of the link so it doesn't become active, the website is also incorrect as it's .gov.uk.

These emails are all too common. I've never seen one purporting to be from HRMC though.

Can you PM me the links the email contains so that I can ensure the host providers can remove the website (if they haven't already)?

There are some fairly convincing scams about involving HMRC or the DWP....

I came across a debt collecting agency that was sending out threatening letters in the name of DWP. They're VERY organised and persistent; to the extent they'll produce fake DWP letters and seem to have insider knowledge and access to some old records...

And the thing is the DWP itself is such a f*cking shambles that it cant/won't address the matter properly!

I've been getting emails from various banks, HMRC etc for some time. I just delete them without looking at them.

Hope I don't get a genuine one - I might get into trouble for not replying!

i tend to call hmrc up when i get an email to verify if it is them and always ask them to send by mail to verify the information on the email. so far scams

Hi Theresia,

I think most banks don't use email to send out important information (sure many of their employees have emails),as it so prone to abuse and fraud...so I wouldn't worry about deleting anything that appears in your email box from a bank.

They prefer to have a hard physical copy of everthing. Keeps everything legal and legit for them also.

I've had a couple of these from HMRC, but they were obvious fakes: bad spelling and punctuation; and generally not the sort of language or style you would expect. Plus the fact that HMRC are hardly going to email you to tell you about a tax rebate.
