Online accounting systems

Sorry if this has been asked before

I currently use sage via our in-house book keeper but she is locaed in Aviemore near one of our businesses and I am located elsewhere. We also have 5 different businesses runing so keeping on top of the accounts is a priority

It is essential this year we more to a online system so I can see the position of teh companies whereever I am located rather than having to get spreadsheets emailed to me etc.

Anyone got online accounts up and running and if so what software and is it good.

Hi Peter,

What version of Sage are you using? If it's Line 50 then Sage offer an online version already. I would think given the size of your business and the fact there are a few knocks something like Kashflow out.

Get back to me on the above and I can perhaps advise some more.

Rather than switch to a different accounting system, have you considered using an on-line collaboration tool as an extension to your existing system?

You mentioned that your bookkeeper is currently mailing spreadsheets to you. My suggesion is that you continue with your existing Sage system, but instead of emailing the spreadsheets, she posts them on a system such as Goolge Docs. That way, you'd be able to access them from any web browser, and you'd be able to annotate them or add questions or comments, which your bookkeeper (or other colleagues) could view and act on.

This is just a thought. The advantage would be the you could try this out, and abandon it if it doesn't work out, without the pain of switching to a new accounting sytem.

We alrewady use google docs extensively so that is possible I just think going forward it would be better to have everything online and systemized so if I do more of what I am doing the new businesses just slot into teh accountant system

I think it is line 50 . I will ask her and let you know

I have a contact who works for liquid accounts so goiing to have a look at that as well

I want this change if change is needed to be a one of and then we standardise all accounting requirements across all interests. Any new businesses would then just slot into the system.

Part of overall bigger projecty to have all our business functions web based in order to increase productivity

Mike's suggestion was a good one but I suspect you may just be outgrowing this. The other way i've addressed this in the past is to try and develop some sort of KPI dashboard which lets you see all the key measurements across your businesses. This would totally depend though on what degree of control and access you need to the actual accounts data.
