Hi Peter
Just a quick tip which I hope will generate some ideas for you......
'Daring to be different'
We did a one off marketing project for a building contractor in Shetland and it brought him a 'magic' return on his investment and got him 6 other jobs in the same street.
The Scenario:
Lets say you get a contract to build a patio at - 48 Whatever Street and in that street there are 10 houses on the same side and a further 10 on the opposite side of the street.
If you visited the other 19 houses - door to door - and spoke to all the neighbours prior to the start of the patio job and introduced yourself. You had just stopped by to inform them that you were starting a job next week at the above address and - the approach is very unobtrusive - that you wanted to make sure that if there were any issues with parking, materials, or disruptions of any kind associated with the job - that people should call you on your direct mobile phone number on your business card.
Remember you have just handed out another 19 business cards to prospective customers with your phone number and web address. (Also puts a face to the name)
You make it clear that you are available "24/7" and that you could be reached for any reason or concern that neighbours may have because you realized that the project and workers would have an impact on the street/neighbourhood/parking etc for a few weeks.
Now, the great thing about this approach is that it lets everyone know who you are, while displaying a conscientious attitude that would be very appealing to neighbours - a different attitude that most contractors may have taken in the past.
Any of the neighbours who might be considering a landscaping project/patio/extension etc may well, because of your concientious attitude, ....remember you. Chances are that people will keep the card for reference anyway, during the current project and then beyond it's completion for future reference.
Taking this approach one step further... you could add on a completion "party" or open house for these same neighbours to attend (hosted by the property owner, but paid for by you the contractor) which also showcases your quality work.
If you spent about £100 on wine/homebakes and you got only 1 new job for reharling a neighbours extension....... would that be worth it ?
That added pro-active component which can be used to help generate referrals from the original project can be very powerful and result in a steady stream of business.
Happy hunting
John
