Is a professional workspace still important for small businesses?

I've been thinking about how much the idea of a professional workplace has changed. Many small businesses can now operate remotely, but there are still situations where having somewhere to meet clients or work away from home can be useful.

I recently came across Ilford Business Centre while looking at different workspace options, and it made me curious about what other small business owners actually value.

Is having a professional workspace still important to you, or can everything be handled remotely these days?

I'm particularly interested in hearing from people who have tried both approaches.

A professional workspace still matters for plenty of UK small businesses, even if day-to-day work is remote. Clients, lenders, and some suppliers often take a business more seriously when there’s a proper meeting space and a credible address (especially for Ltd companies),and it helps with boundaries when home working starts blurring.

Remote works well when delivery is fully online and you’re not client-facing. But for anything involving trust, signatures, sensitive conversations, or regular collaboration, a serviced office or bookable meeting room can pay for itself.

  • Hybrid sweet spot: remote + pay-as-you-go meeting rooms
  • Registered office vs trading address: keep home off the public record if privacy matters
  • Practicalities: post handling, insurance, GDPR, and a quiet space for calls
