If you were launching a new consumer brand today, which platform would you focus on first?

Depends on the product and who's buying it. For a brand starting from zero followers, TikTok is usually the better first move. Organic reach is still far higher than Instagram, so a small account can land in front of thousands without paying, and the UK audience is no longer just teenagers; the 25 to 44 bracket has grown fast.

Instagram makes more sense if the product is visual and considered (homeware, jewellery, premium food) or the typical customer is 30+. Reach is harder to earn there, but saved posts and the shop features do more of the selling once people arrive.

Practical route: pick one, post consistently for 90 days, then repurpose the best clips to the other with minimal extra effort. Use Meta Business Suite and TikTok's built-in analytics to see what's actually converting before putting money into ads. Splitting focus on day one tends to kill both.

For a new consumer brand, I'd start on TikTok and treat Instagram as the backup reel. It's simply easier to be discovered when you have no following, and TikTok's search has quietly turned into a buying-research tool for younger customers — people look up products there the way they used to on Google. That said, TikTok content has a short shelf life, so whatever you post should funnel people somewhere you actually own, like an email list or a shop they can find again. Instagram is worth having because the profile still acts as your proof of legitimacy when someone checks you out. Post the same content on both, but spend your effort where the discovery happens, which is TikTok for most consumer brands right now.
