Today Apple released a major upgrade to the .mac account system and iTunes.

The changes are:

1. iTunes update for PC and Mac users and a mobileme update for Apple users.

2. .Mac is now renamed mobileme.

3. Added the app store to the iTunes store. This allows you to download free and purchased software for iphones and ipods.

4. If you have a .mac email address (ie [email protected]) then you will also gain a [email protected] account. The .me will eventually supersede the .mac ending.

5. Windows users of iTunes will now find a 'mobileme' preferences icon in their control panel.

6. Apple users will notice that the .mac icon in system preferences is now renames 'mobileme'

7. First generation iphones will be automatically updated to version 2 software the next time that you synchronise the phone through iTunes.

8. For Windows user, Outlook can now be automatically configured to seamlessly synchronise your Apple email, contacts and calendars so that you have access to them through Outlook.

The whole reason for this is 'the cloud'. This is Apple's equivalent of what the Blackberry phones are capable of but without the need for an expensive Windows Server.
