Has anyone switched from working at home to a business centre?

I'm considering trying a business centre a couple of days each week and have been looking at options like Ilford Business Centre.

I'm not expecting anything life-changing, but I do wonder if having a dedicated place to work makes it easier to stay productive and separate work from home life.

If you've made a similar switch, was it worth it? What changed for you?

Yes, for a lot of small business owners it’s been “worth it” in a very practical way, even if it’s not transformational. The biggest change tends to be structure: leaving the house, arriving somewhere set up for work, and having a clear end point when you leave. Doing 2 days a week is often the sweet spot because it creates routine without locking you into a big commitment.

What usually improves is focus and boundaries. Fewer household interruptions, less temptation to do chores, and it’s easier to run your day like a proper workday (start time, lunch, finish time). It can also help mentally if home has become associated with “always on”. Some people find they sleep better because they’re not working in the same space they relax.

On the business side, a centre can make you look more established: a meeting room for clients, a proper address for correspondence, and sometimes decent reception/post handling. If you run a Ltd company, check what address you’re using for Companies House and HMRC—some centres allow registered office use, some don’t, and there may be a fee. If you’re a sole trader, it can still be useful for privacy if you don’t want your home address on invoices/website.

Before signing anything, look closely at:
  • Minimum term, notice period, and any rent increases
  • What’s included (business rates, utilities, printing, meeting rooms)
  • Internet reliability and phone signal
  • Access hours, parking, and how noisy it gets

If you try it, treat those days as “deep work” days (calls/meetings grouped, proper to-do list). That’s where the value usually shows up quickest.

I made the switch a couple of years ago and it was worth it. The separation of work and home is the biggest benefit. I actually start and finish on time now. It's not life-changing but it's a noticeable improvement. Also helps with productivity because there are fewer distractions.

That's a good point. The separation alone seems to be one of the biggest advantages. Have you found that being around other professionals has helped with networking or motivation as well?

I think having a dedicated workspace can make a bigger difference than you expect. Working from home is convenient, but it’s easy to get distracted or keep thinking about work after hours.

I haven’t made the switch myself, but I’d definitely consider trying a business centre a couple of days a week first. It seems like a good way to see whether the change actually improves focus and gives you a better work-life separation.
