Remember Mr Non Techy here....

I was on the Google Analytics web pages....but my eyes were glossing over....

How does it all work, what does it do, will it be good for me?

For something that can produce incredibly complex results and a huge amount of useful information, it is really easy to setup.

Register for a Google account if you haven't already, and then register for an Analytics account. During the registration you will setup your first profile (your first website). It will ask for a domain name and a couple other bits and bobs (nothing technical) and then provide you with a chunk of Javascript that you include in the header of each of your webpages.

As soon as google verifies that the code is there it starts recording your information. You can then (after 24 hours) start to view your reports, and customise the information to suit yourself. You can also set goals that help you follow your visitors journey through your site to make sure your content is guiding the visitor towards your goal page. This would be the checkout for an ecommerce site, or maybe a contact page for a business site etc.

Honestly Gordon it's really easy to setup and in my opinion the most convenient analytics product out there (that's free!). It can provide an absolute wealth of information that can then be exported in all sorts of ways for use elsewhere.

I would recommend any site sign up for it as it's free and very useful. If you need any help getting it up and running or setting up the code just give me a shout.

Regards,

'The other' Gordon

I recommend the book "Google Analytics 2.0" to my clients. It saves me from being on the phone with them all the time!
