Getting Started in Business – Advice for New Start-Ups

Hello everyone,

I’m at the early stage of starting a business and wanted to join this discussion to learn from people who have already gone through the start-up journey in the UK. Starting a business is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming with so many decisions to make early on.

I’m particularly looking for guidance on:

  • Choosing the right business structure (sole trader vs limited company)
  • Understanding initial costs and funding options
  • Registering the business and meeting legal requirements
  • Common mistakes new start-ups should avoid
  • Tips for finding the first customers
I believe forums like this are extremely valuable because real experiences and practical advice often matter more than theory. Any tips, lessons learned, or resources you’d recommend for someone just getting started would be greatly appreciated.

The answer to all your questions is: it depends...

In particular it depends on the type of business you plan to start.

A window cleaner needs a ladder, bucket and squeegee and a Google Business Profile. If you want to set up an online gambling website expect a whole different set of challenges.
