The Potten Computer School, based in Portobello, has launched the Young Photographer 2010 Competition commencing with 4 three-day photography courses, divided between two age groups: 9 - 12-year-olds (the clickers) and 13 – 16-year-olds (the zoomers).

Heather and her husband Jonathan, both ex school teachers, run a series of excellent courses at their school, designed to enhance basic computer skills for all age groups to help them understand, have fun and get creative with technology.

The dates for the photography courses are:

9 August 2-4 9 August 5-7 9 August 9-11 9 August 12 -14

The theme is The Beach with each course comprising of:

Day 1 9.30 – 12.30 Taking photos

· includes discussing themes, looking at other photographers’ work and completing a photographic assignment on Portobello Beach

Day 2 9.30 – 12.30 Learning editing techniques

· includes downloading and filing photos, using an online editing program to crop, straighten, adjust colour & light, use text and add photographic effects

Day 3 9.30 – 12.30 Creating a perfect photo

· includes applying the techniques learned over the previous 2 days to create and print final photos for the exhibition

After completion of the courses there will be a presentation of student photographs to a panel of judges (connected to The Arts and Photography sector locally) who will determine the best photographs in 3 creative categories for both age groups. There is an excellent prize list for all competition winners.

“We are really excited by the interest shown in the project,” said Heather “as the younger generation often look at things from a different perspective. They click, zoom and capture the moment in fresh and imaginative ways. I’m confident that we will see some fantastic images on display.”

The presentation and judging of photographs submitted for the competition will be held at the Kings Manor Hotel located at 100 Milton Road East on Sunday 22nd August between 2pm – 4 pm. The winning entries will then be exhibited at The Portobello Public Art House in Kings Road (56) in association with Big Things on The Beach, from August 26th – 20th August 2010.

Release ends .........
