Can to Tories actually pull it off?

Hi Everyone,

Based on the recent pledge by the Tories to create a tax break by introducing an employers NI contribution exemption if they're in the first year of business, do you think this will actually make any difference? Could it undermine the existing businesses who can't take advantage of the tax break?

It just doesn't seem to be enough for me, smaller businesses need more of an helping hand than this. Once again Vince Cable seems to be talking the most sense, i think this is a man who could definitely help turn this country around.

Relatively speaking I think it's an insignificant move which simply flags up the fact that the new Conservative Government will carry on with the same old spin and nonsense a Blair, Brown, Thatcher and the grey-man did....

And yes; there is a danger that it will (like many an ill-conceived scheme before it) undercut existing businesses while they're in their most critical phase...

It's a nother reflection of how out of touch these people are with reality. As Vince Cable put it....

""Many small businessmen will be shocked to learn that the Tories believe a start-up business has a wage bill of £250,000. "

...Or even a turnover approaching a fraction of that! If they want the 'ready salted' approach to real world figures they could try watching "Dragon's Den"

I have to agree with Neil on this. This completely alienates exisiting businesses and puts them at a competitive disadvantage and at a time when many small businesses are struggling.

It really does annoy me that various political parties and business groups dont seem to see a business as a proper thing until they get turnover of over £250,000 and sometimes even alot more. The fact is that the lifeblood of this country is in the businesses who are quite a bit underneath this threshold. These business groups also p*ss me off with all there welcoming this and not liking that. I get the impression they make these stupid statements just to justify their actual exisitence

I couldn't agree more , it only continues to confirm how dis-jointed this countries MP's are becoming from the actually people who keep the cog's ticking on a daily basis.

Public sector inefficiencies and over-spending, the expenses scandal, boom now bust, the credit crunch, etc, etc.........what exactly qualifies the government or any other party to comment, let alone introduce policies in support of small businesses?

This latest announcement by the conservatives is right up there with the announcement the gov't made previously about reducing VAT to 15% - another ineffective gesture that will do little to actually help.

It's a daft idea... The Tories (and other parties) should put considerably more effort into the problem of a lack of risk equity capital to properly support start-ups and spin-outs. Our company birth rate is pathetic....
