Domains really are only really worth what someone is prepared to pay for it. I guess bond.com could be used for other things as it is quite generic. From my knowledge of domains the hyphens are not normally a good idea although someone who's more of an expert may disagree.

They're not a great idea... Verbally they're hard to get across to people...

I have matt-quinn.com and .co.uk ...but tend not to particularly promote them. Although I HAVE found them useful in terms of 'anchoring' the company name in the market... The versions WITHOUT the hyphen seem to be parked; have been for some time...

What about mattquinn.me.uk? I haven't really seen many domains using the .me.uk extension I'll maybe try and get an opinion on if this is equally useful as .co.uk as it does have .uk in it.

mattquinn.co.uk is registered until September 2008, you could maybe think about putting a domain sniper on to this to check and see if it comes available. :)

To be honest I personally don't rate anything other than .com or .co.uk (or whatever country you're in) extensions... I don't think they particularly 'hook' into people's minds; and for that reason haven't bought (for instance) TFG.tv ...it wasn't a valid extension when I set up; and since the .com and .co.uk are well rooted it's of little commercial value.... I'd have a strong 'passing off' case against anyone using it...

mattquinn.com (or .co.uk) ....if I can pick it up for the re-registration fee fine. But again the two domains that are up there help 'root' the company identity so it;s of limited value to my mind. ..maybe aye maybe naww...:D But I'd not pay a lot for it...

So if any of our members have ant secret domain lurking then you could be making a fortune by selling them as it seems you'll get good value just now

Well, just checked in on Sedo... 5 days to go and it (bond.com) is sitting at

Anyone know what the Bond.com auction closed at?

Last time I checked it was at $72,000. It obviously didn't make its reserve since it's now open to 'offers'.....

It was interesting to see how the press always went with James Bond when quantifying it's worth when in reality being a finance related domain is where it likely had more value, like fund.com sold for $10 million USD. I agree that apart from .com the main other decent tld's are country codes like .de and .co.uk

I own some nice UK domains like Belief.co.uk, Economics.co.uk, Genes.co.uk & TVs.co.uk and am in the middle of buying one this week that could be worth a small fortune and be my best one yet.

Interesting to note that Bond.co.uk is a software company whilst bonds.com (with the 'S') is indeed a broker....

With that In mind I'm wondering to what degree bond.com was devalued to the financial market? After all it's so close to the other one to perhaps open the 'passing off' can of worms and perhaps even bring the user into disrepute as a result?

As for the James Bond link; well I'm sure when the press releases were done for the domain they took into account the possible issues in going for the financial market. Personally I think the timing was wrong. they should have waited till new new film is about to be released; maybe even timed the sale of the domain to coincide with it... And I think the value over estimated... a 1/2 million quid overhead on any piece of merchandising smacks more of millstone than asset to me.

The .co.uk domains... Hmmm; I could see TVs selling to an electrical retailer of course; Wouldn't it be an idea though to put something up there saying it's available for sale or lease?

Belief... Well I could give you the name of a Motherwell based religious crank who might well be interested; my only worry is that he'd never actually pay you for it! :D

Genes... Has to be a hospital or something? The .Com has a password on it... All very mysterious... But unless someone DOES perfect those 'grow your own Michelle Yeoh' kits I mentioned in another thread, with who might the commercial value lie I wonder?

...As for other country codes. I can certainly see the value if you want to offer a localised service or the country code but otherwise they always seem to sit a little awkwardly... I know Scottish Telelvision would have been happier with STV.com than STV.tv ....But weren't interested in paying the ransom for Scottish.tv....

It's an interesting game...

Genes also lends itself well to genealogy, genesreunited type of thing which is another huge market, outwith the obvious genomics side of things which is growing fast.

Just for info some recent UK sales in the last year or so.
Cruises.co.uk

That's a point... the genealogy market is quite healthy...

The top sellers you have listed there are in the main of value because they're related to products or services that UK buyers wouldn't want to buy outside the UK OR would be looking for UK specific information... that or they're protecting a brand (although there ARE definitely a few left-fielders in there!)

Generically though... I'd almost always go for the .com first.

Curious you should come up with that scotlandtv.co.uk name.... Someone ran that past me quite some time ago. One of my company's trading names specialisies in 'tourist videos'....

I walked past both it AND the .com (which is also parked) because I felt there wasn't any potential for a 'natural brand' or catchphrase in the name. The phrase doesn't make sense.. ScotlandONtv.com would; though.. Sadly.. that's already parked up and doesn't seem to have been developed.
