Anyone know how to clean a laser printer?

Hi All,

I have recently aquired an Oki C9400. Everything was fine at first when i was playing around with it. Now, everytime i print something there is a faint grey background that covers the whole sheet of paper! (almost like the "hissy" screen when u pull the aerial out of the TV)

I opened it up and there was lots of toner spillage inside, i got the hoover out and cleaned it all out, but the problem still exists!!

I tried running lots of blank pages through it to see if that sorted it, but no luck!

I didnt get a disk with the printer and just downloaded the driver, etc from the Oki website and I cant seem to find anything about cleaning, etc!

Any suggestions anyone?????

If it has a charge wire in it (older laser printers invariably do) then clean it VERY GENTLY with a cloth. Look for a wire that runs the length of the imaging unit.

I did notice a thick wire in there when i removed the cardridges, etc.

It was about 5mm thick (i think), does this sound like the bit i should clean??

Also, will i clean it with Isopropanol Alcohol or something???

Thanks!

Andy

That will be it.

Clean it with isoprop if you want or just a clean, lightly damp cloth.

My only warning though is BE CAREFUL. The charge wire is very delicate. Break or stretch it and you'll be in trouble!

I cleaned that bar thingy, but no luck!

So i decided to clean absolutely everything inside with isoprop! I rekoned i would either cure it, or kill it!! :D

Looks like its working for now! i can still see the odd faint mark, but its extremely faint and i think i can only see it because i know its there!

Gonna try printing stuff out tomorrow, so fingers crossed!! :)

Thanks for your help!!

Hi Mate,

It's not the toner cartridge itself is it?

Have a peek under the wee protective cover they have (like old VHS tapes), and you should see the (usually green) drum. Give that a very light rub with an anti-static cloth :)

Hey Stugster,

I cleaned all the green drums with Isoprop. i wasnt sure if it would damage them, as i read online that they are very sensitive, but i went for it anyway!! ;)

Prints seem good now! I will see how it goes when i start it up later!

I also installed another driver for it from the oki website, but i dont think that had anything to do with the print quality.
