Advertising on my website

I have been approached by email by an SEO company wanting me to host a banner and up to 3 links to topics that they say will be relevant to my website and that they will pay me to do so. Does that actually exist or am I being duped into something I may regret?
They want to pay me £30 for a banner and £15 per article per month...should I be biting their hand off?

I would be careful with something like this to be honest, you will need to do some digging in to the company and if possible their existing clients to find out how 'straight' the offer is.

I would be more concerned with placing adverts on a small business site at all. We are all used to ads on portal style sites or forums/blogs, but when was the last time you visited a small biz site that carried off banners without looking like they only did it for the money? I for one place more value and trust in a business that doesn't rely on selling space on their site to other businesses - or google adWords for that matter!

I believe there is opportunity to promote associated businesses and services, more so on a local basis - but you have to be very careful as to how it is achieved.

Just my take on things, hope it helps. :)

I would echo what Gordon says. It needs some careful examination to see whether it's actually a genuine offer or not. You really need to know how much of this you actually control as it very easy to cloak links to undesirable places etc. Google will penalise you for linking to what it calls "bad neighbourhoods" and it would be a shame if that was to result for some sort of ban for your site.

I'm a great believer in if something seems too good to be true then it probably is and I think you'll find with this that it's not all as rosy as is made out.

Just my 2p thought and I could be soooo wrong :p

Thank you Gordon and for that.
Gordon do you mind if I send you a copy of the last email they sent to me and see what you think?

I've had a few of these recently as well. Is it the time of the year for these things or is it just another scam doing the rounds?

Interesting thread. I recently received an email from someone asking to place an ad on my site which (if I understood the rather vague email correctly) would then link to some kind of internet gambling operation.

Even if this was not an outright scam it's certainly not something a lot of businesses would want to be associated with. If somebody clicks an ad on your site and gets directed to a gambling or porn site it will not reflect well on your own business. (Unless, of course, you're actually already in that line of business:blink:.) And, as says, this sort of thing could get you blacklisted on Google.

As most posters above have already said: proceed with caution. Let us all know how you get on with this.

Thank you so much for all your advice. It is why I decided to ask on here. has had a wee look and said he was unable to find anything untoward said about the company making this offer on the internet. The banner and articles that they want me to host on my index page are for a well know established business which is wedding related. If I am unhappy about anything in the articles then I am allowed to ask them to change it. The articles themselves will also have links in them to the same company as the banner.
The banners vary in size from small to quite large and the articles are just small text links. I think I am basically talking myself into this!
I advertise a lot of wedding related businesses on my website and all I ask, is for a reciprocal link, so this seems quite nice to have someone pay me to do the same.
