It would be interesting to know if 1, there are any business owners here, and 2, what type of business you own?

Feel free to post links below to help us get a better idea :)

Very belated reply Ryan but I've just found out about these forums and joined. New to having an apprentice too but I'll be telling her about this site.

I'm self-employed as the owner of a Fair Trade shop (often called a 'World' Shop). It is only a small shop but we sell a huge range of fairly traded products from foods and beverages, to fashion accessories, hand crafted home wares and gift items, incense, textiles, jewellery, greetings cards and more. As well as selling directly to the public we also sub-supply 'fair traders' who are volunteer sellers of fairly traded products. When I first heard about the idea of retail apprenticeships I felt doubtful that such a small shop as mine could justify taking on an apprentice but when I thought it over because we sell such a wide range of products and because of our 'sub-supply' business there actually seemed a lot for an apprentice to learn and hopefully via doing so this would open up a variety of long term employment opportunities.

N.B. Got here by following a link from the UK Business Forums where the company which employed you as an apprentice have done a couple of plugs for this site.

That sounds like a really exciting business! It's going to be such fun for an apprentice, as they're dealing with all sorts of things! Let us know how you get on! :)

They offered too after I told them, I'm delighted it's bringing members in! :)

Hi Ryan,

I'm a Private Investigator and just going through the motions at the moment of setting up my Business and getting everything in place (I'm actually set up already as a Ltd Company at Companies House).

Part of my Business Plan, possibly after month 6 is to take on a couple of Students or Apprentices for both the office And out on Surveillance jobs etc.. Definitely not for cheap labour, I would be paying well over the Minimum wage, but more so because I think young people have a lot to offer and could be a huge asset to my Business, they are also (the majority of the time) more keen and ambitious and excited to do well, in my opinion anyway.

Will keep you all posted on how things are going.

Regards

Stuart

I don't have a business but i use to work in a call center company in Finland where i use to be in contact centre for giving customer service and being in this job is quite hard because you can see how important is business and its customer.
I've got a work colleague who has a cabin over there, supposed to be a really nice place :)
