Another gem of a post from Seth Godin that's probably one of the best explanations of exactly what viral marketing is and isn't. I visit loads of forums and always find people trying to grasp this idea. Seth's post is a great starting point :)

Viral marketing is when your site gets promoted exponentially across the web without you having to pay dollar for dollar for each individual visitor you get. For example, word of mouth marketing is the most common form of viral marketing ... people tell people, those people tell people, and the buzz grows exponentially (similar to the way a virus attacks your body).

iral marketing is an idea that spreads--and an idea that while it is spreading actually helps market your business or cause.

Two kinds of viral marketing: The original classic sort in which the marketing is the product and which a self-amplifying cycle occurs. Hotmail, for example, or YouTube. The more people use them, the more people see them. The more people see them, the more people use them. The product or service must be something that improves once more people use it.

A second kind has evolved over the last few years, and that's a marketing campaign that spreads but isn't the product itself. Shepard Fairey's poster of Barack Obama was everywhere, because people chose to spread it. It was viral (it spread) and it was marketing (because it made an argument--a visual one--for a candidate.)

James,

At time of writing you've made five posts in a very short time. If we type the text of this latest one of yours in we find it cut-and-paste from a couple of sources. I recognised it instantly because a couple of my lamer students have used the text in essays (and failed as a result!)

All of your post so far are characterised by one thing: A vacuous and typically short reply!

Now James, you wouldn't be one of those spammers who logs onto a forum only to get their post count up to a stage where they can post lame links to snake oil sites would you?

I only mention it because I have a suspicious mind. Of course if you've something of your own of worth to add to the forum I'm sure we will all more than welcome you...
