VAT / VAT Exempt

Good-Morning, me & my sonographer wife are opening a scanning clinic. We have been told we are vat exempt as she will produce written medical reports (this is by another clinic she works at)
Does this include on the initial set-up also?
We are about to sign a lease on a shop which is £15,000 +vat per annum. We are also purchasing a machine for £30,000 +vat. I have spoke to both suppliers and asked to take the vat away as I have been told we are VAT Exempt but both have no idea what I’m talking about (neither do I to be honest).
Am I going about this in the right way or is there a simpler fix?
Any info appreciated.
Cheers

I can provide general information that may help you understand the VAT exemption for medical services in the UK.

In the UK, medical services provided by registered healthcare professionals are typically exempt from VAT. This includes diagnostic imaging services provided by qualified sonographers, provided that they are interpreted and reported by a registered medical practitioner.

However, the exemption does not apply to the sale or lease of equipment, or to the provision of non-medical services, such as facility rental or administrative support. Therefore, you may still need to pay VAT on the lease of the shop and the purchase of the scanning machine.

To confirm whether your business qualifies for VAT exemption, you may need to seek advice from a qualified accountant or tax advisor who can review your specific circumstances and provide guidance on your VAT obligations. They can also advise you on how to properly register your business with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) and submit VAT returns if necessary.

I hope this information helps clarify the VAT exemption for medical services in the UK. If you need any accounting help I'll recommend you, Hayes Accountant I'm not able to mention their link but you can search it on google to find them.

First of all, congratulations on opening the clinic!

You are correct that medical scanning services are VAT free in the UK. This, you can see, also entails giving patients written medical reports.

But all your machine acquisition and the lease on your store are regarded as "supplies" for VAT. Since they need to deliver your medical scanning services, they are free from VAT.

You should be able to convince the vendors to take the VAT out of the leasing and machine bills. By giving them a copy of your VAT registration certificate, which you can request from HMRC, you can do this.

The processes for requesting a VAT registration certificate are as follows:

Go to gov. uk/guidance/register-for-vat to access the HMRC website.

The "Register for VAT" button should be clicked.

And now you can follow the website's directions.

Fill in all the information about your company, including your name, address, and phone number.
