I've just came across the website below.

The Hirer: Have you got what it takes to work for her?

It seems a very interesting concept and one I actually wish I had came up with myself. This looks like it has a great deal of potential and I will be watching this with interest.

Maybe some on here would also fancy a go

This seems to be a Scottish version of The Apprentice but instead of Sir Alan Sugar, it's 'star' is a former hairdresser who now sells fake tanning stuff.

And what a name she has, Sandra McClumpha!

In all seriousness, who are the two most visible female businesswomen in Scotland? One makes knickers, the other makes fake tans. God knows it's true that Scotland doesn't have a glass ceiling - it's made of reinforced concrete - but there aren't any strong role models for Scottish businesswomen to follow either.

Lord talk about the Scottish “I kent yer faither” syndrome….… Here is someone who has taken what has to be a fantastic idea, and launched it. I’ve spoken with G Hill Lyons the creator and found out that over 150,000 people (albeit some from Eastern European countries) registered to be considered. Think about it – when did you have 150,000 people interested in your last idea?

Reading about Sandra McClumpha (who the hell cares if her name sounds weird – I had a meeting two weeks ago with a guy called Richard Puller who went by the first name of Dick!!!!) it shows what you can do if you put your mind to it. Here is someone who hasn’t sat back and accepted what life had in store for your typical person who left school with no qualifications and has shown that academia is not always what we should be judging our future employees/bosses on.

As for a rip off of The Apprentice, I’ve just spent 10 minutes on the phone with Greta to find out more about this project as it is something I’d love to be involved with, to find out that rather than firing candidates each week for “poor performance”, all 8 will continue right to the end and will be coached by Fraser Murray from Rock the Boat consulting. I’ve also dealt with Fraser in the past and know that he wouldn’t get involved in a project that he didn’t believe in. Any perceived “weak” areas in the 8 candidates skill set will be coached to strengthen their skill set.

Think about this for a minute – these 8 candidates – one of whom will get what is described as a fantastic job with a global entrepreneur (are you guys who are knocking this global or local?) and the other 7 will go into our Scottish workforce with skills that are to be snapped up quickly if not by their present employers then by others who are looking for fantastic employees.

Yep – it is easy to knock something and it’s a damn sight harder to put yourself out there and say “I’m doing this and to hell with where my father came from and who he knew”……….

That's all well and good, but those 150,000 people didn't register for a job opportunity. They registered to see themselves on TV. There are opportunities for apprenticeships, corporate and personal coaching, etc, every day. You just have to have the chutzpah to go out there and grab those opportunities yourself, not wait for a TV production company's runner to hook you up with the coach on STV's bill.

As for Sandra's background, I am sooooo tired of the Scottish syndrome of competing to see whose background is the poorest, least educated, most deprived, etc. In the US people compete over who has the most education and memberships, in Scotland they compete over who has the least, which leads to supposedly intelligent managers insisting they grew up on the 108th floor of a tower block in the Gorbals with no electricity, running water, or lifts, so they ate bird droppings for sustenance etc etc. Any grown adult manager who can't get over their childhood should go back to the nursery.

There are lots of people doing what the producers on that show are doing, every day, but they don't spin it into a televised competition. I should correct that and say that they try to do it every day, despite the real "I kent yer faither" attitudes above and below them. Let's give those people the support and encouragement they need, even if they're not interested in televised spectacle.

Heather - it's not on TV - the whole "spectacle" as you call it is being played out on Webtv not STV or anything like it - though Greta did mention that Living TV had been in touch as they wanted to carry it, however Greta's company is not a TV production company. Their vision is to change recruitment and development of individuals to the benefit of Corporate Scotland. No mean feat in itself. As for your comment on Scottish Backgrounds - look at how many of our successful entrepreneurs left school without qualifications and yet have managed to build up global brand names.

We as a nation - as history has shown - are great at taking ideas and running with them, sticking in when things go wrong as we know we'll get the right outcome with perseverance.

As for childhood – our childhood shapes us all. It comes down to life experience and what you do with it.

As for how many of the 150,000 candidates who registered wanted to be on TV - well again the hirer website states that it is a web channel. I've no idea how many wanted to be on TV but I'm sure there were just as many who want to work for a global company.

As a woman in business, and from the comments you have made – perhaps one who has hit ceilings yourself; Sandra (McClumpha),Michelle (Mone),Greta (Hill-Lyons) probably all have hit concrete ceilings but rather than accept them have gotten hold of jack hammers and powered through them….. As for few female role models – How about Audrey Baxter, Ann Gloag, Kirsty Bathgate, Norma Colette, Alison Loudon, Colette Murphy, Kim Winser, Ann Rushforth…. And that’s just off the top of my head!

I get annoyed when people – male or female – knock or denigrate ideas on their doorstep. I get annoyed when people comment without looking into projects but rather just open their mouths and let their bellies rumble. It is an attitude that unfortunately is prevalent in Scotland and although there are people and agencies out there trying to change this attitude, I have a feeling it is going to take at least 2 generations before it dies out. If we work embrace our heritage, our legacy, our ideas, our passion, I truly believe there is nothing we as a country cannot do. All it takes is the right attitude, belief in oneself and in our abilities.

Yes, we need a new way of thinking in Scotland. And signing up to be verbally abused on a webcam by a lady with a spray gun is not the way to accomplish it.

I know just the sorts of people who will be auditioning for this programme - people like the recruitment consultants who told me my education simply does not count because it did not come from this country, and likewise the recruitment consultants who told me I have no Scottish qualifications, therefore I have no qualifications; and always with the petty jealousy visible on their faces. In other words, people who want fifteen minutes in the spotlight because they could never accomplish it with what they've got. Scotland does indeed need to get over its disgust and mistrust of accomplishment and achivement; but anyone who thinks they can find it via a reality show audition is missing the point entirely.

At least we can look forward to a genuinely Scottish crop of Z-list reality show "celebrities" in the papers for the next year or two.

I have just been made aware of this ongoing comments about my Project The Hirer and would like to take this opportunity to reply to some misquotes.

1 - This project was designed to highlight Scottish Talent and that a CV is not the best selling tool to advance your career. Our concept embraces the internet and the opportunities this platform can provide. The calibre of candidates that registered for this opportunity was excellent and not wannabe's looking for celebrity.
Designed to develop candidates weak areas to allow progression and success - so why would such negative comments be made.
2- There will be no verbal abuse at any candidates, we are a professional organisation looking to provide a quality candidate to The Hirer - who is Sandra McClumpha, an Award Winning Business Woman, who single handed built up a global empire and not just by tanning them....... now has an opportunitiy to join her team in Glasgow - and why should this not evoke interest from people that want to develop their skills and join a global brand?

Forfeits? Are you having a laugh? I think it's pretty clear Tirfuir that you have a vested interest in this project. Unfortunately some people will see this as a Dragon's Den rip off and others will have their opinions both negative and positive. Posts like the one above I can be doing without on this forum.

You've basically waded in trying to argue a point which is really against the etiquette of many forums. Unless you have something constructive to say and contribute then please lets keep forfeits etc off this forum.
