I see the humour, but in my past career as an executive assistant, searching for accommodation for my boss in a strange city on the other side of the world, I would have exited that web site assuming it was a joke. Certainly not good enough for my VIP.

North Castle Street Apartment | ScottishApartment.com

This is a real website - click the images at the top of the screen and pay attention to the picture of the bed.

They are leaving the image on their site as traffic has increased dramatically!

Ooooookaaaayy.....

Firstly on a level I think it IS funny BUT.....

Then I'm wondering what sort of a bunch of pr**ks they are that would hack someone off so badly they'd do that when they left... Or alternatively what sort of a bunch of pr**ks that would employ the sort of tosser who would imagine this was an appropriate 'sign off' from their employment....

And suddenly I'm picturing an office full of 20-something imbiciles in ready-made 'designer' suits just taking the pith all day long and given the market segment they're addressing I'm thinking; they just don't geddit....

They might be getting all sorts of traffic? But is it doing more harm than good?

Well yes they may well get lots of traffic to their site, but I doub't that it will be business traffic.

Just loads of people who want to see the photograph....it really won't be doing the company much good at all.

I mean owners clearly know it there; so why are they keeping it there?

Okay, it's time for some answers here I think.

This is half correct, it IS a real site and the word "dramatically" does not do 6 months worth of traffic in 96 hours justice.

The reason it is still on the site is because of the 148 links that now point to the page: Inbound links

This is a valid point, however, there are a number of arguments against it - it is exceptionally unlikely you would land on that particular page of the site when searching for the services the company offers and even if you did you would need to enlarge the photo to see it - even assuming you did the likelihood is high that you'd find it funny and ask the company what it is all about (they got in excess of 200 such emails and phone calls, each of them an opportunity to make a sale)

Having links to your website with keyword rich anchor text does a LOT more good than harm :)

It's all about the links my friend :)

It should be evident that I know from an inside source that this has worked extremely well for them.

It's all about the links my friend :)

I'm reminded of a story Peter Ustinov used to tell....

Back in the days of the good old USSR party officials met to sweat over a few pressing matters. One key issue was that the good folks out in the nether regions of the mighty empire were short of Wellington Boots and fur coats. Couldn’t get them for love nor money..... These items being made primarily in Moscow and shipped out by train....

Production was high, plenty were being made. So clearly the problem was transport. The goods obviously weren’t being loaded onto trains and travelling the rail miles out to these desperate regions. SO! One bright spark decided the thing to do was to make sure the goods got loaded onto trains and measure that; and every time a load travelled a hundred miles that fact would be recorded as a stat and fed back to the party...

Six months later the party met again. Still the folk on the edges of the mighty empire were freezing cold with wet feet. Transport officials were puzzled. Statistics showed that the goods were loaded onto trains, and travelled as many rail miles in a day as they’d previously covered in six weeks! Baffled by this all the party could do was order that a greater effort be made to ensure these goods travelled even MORE rail miles! More statistics must be gathered, more boxes ticked!
The second problem that the party had to deal with that day was the fact the commuter trains in Moscow were at a virtual standstill. They couldn’t move for freight trains full of welly boots and fur coats going round and round in circles clocking up rail miles!!!

Sorry; they can have all the links in the world; they're still making themselves look like a bunch of completely unprofessional w...ers!

I don't quite get the analogy with the wellies and fur coats (good story though!)
