Many people will be unaware of it BUT a change, in the shape of a 2003 Statutory Instrument altered the 1988 Copyright act to the extent where listening to the TV or Radio on your business premises requires a licence from the PRS AND another one from PPL...
This extends EVEN to premises where customers aren't present. So that 'wee tranny' sitting on the corner of your desk or even the car radio left on while you're working outside could pose a problem...
NOT much has been done about the SI because it seems to have sneaked past most folk. Save for the fact that the PRS now seem to be prowling the land looking for pretty unreasonable fees from business...
Some would argue this is in the songwriter's interests. It's not. By shutting down free access to music that HAS ALREADY been licened and paid for can only damage sales of music and indeed the broadcasters themselves..
It's a weak shot and in many ways quite naively phrased. But there is currently a petition running here...
Petition to: arrange for the clarification of The Copyright, Designs and Patent Act with regatrds to the listening of radios. | Number10.gov.uk
This could at least raise awareness of the issue and help us move matters on in the longer term... and if you want to know just how daft and vicious the PRS are being about this...
