Hi,

Ive always wanted to join either the RAF or Army and I found out they do apprenticeships, and apparently they do them in IT. Is this a good career move? Im only 16 so I didnt know whether it was too early for someone my age

Hi Jack, they do indeed do Apprenticeships! In fact, I was looking at getting into one myself about 4 or 5 months ago. The thing is, you're going to have to decide what part of I.T you want to get into as the RAF offer a lot of different career options in that sector. You can see a list of RAF Apprenticeships here.

As you can see from those Apprenticeships, they have 5 or 6 different IT Apprenticeships, that's just on that page! They probably have even more different job types in those roles. So it's whether you want to fix/repair computers and work on that side, or whether you want to use the software on a PC.

May I ask, what are your future aspirations? Like Web Designer, Computer Engineer/Technician? I might be able to be more specific and help you further :)

P.S - just seen your welcome thread, I should have said hello first lol

Thank you for providing that link, I did look on the website but couldnt find anything??

I want to get in to a web related IT apprenticeship, I was looking at the 'Advanced Apprenticeship in IT, Software, Web & Telecomms Professionals' apprenticeship. Do you think its a good apprentice to get in to and what is required for it do you know?

Great to see you reply as it's a topic I'm enjoying helping with..

Providing you're willing to stick 3 years out with the Apprenticeship, then it certainly looks like a good choice! Also, a few good things about the RAF Apprenticeships are.. your pay after 1 year will be at least £17,000, you receive six weeks paid holiday per year, you get food and accommodation, free dental and health care and free gym access.

You may be required to move away however, which can be hard for someone young. So it's definitely worth ringing them up and asking for more information about that job type.

I would definitely recommend the RAF over the Army any day from previous family experience!

Feel free to ask any more questions on it :)

Thank you ryan!! I was looking at the army a while back but the RAF caught my eye more and I was recommended it to!

I will get back to you soon to tell you about the decision I have made :) :)

Yes, please do! And in the meantime, if you do need any help, remember we're only a post away!

Good luck, and I look forward to hearing your decision :)

I've actually considered this in the past as well but am not sure if I want to commit to it yet as I'm also in the IT field but have contemplated some other lines of work too so am still trying to narrow it down as like Ryan said, the IT field alone is quite broad. I'd actually do some Googling on some career opportunities for the different IT fields so you can see what each consists of and the salaries so you can determine which is right for you.

From my understanding, anything with networking/security is excellent if you're into that stuff as that's in demand right now globally.

Like Gus said, it's a broad career sector, so it definitely has many opportunities that you could get in to, you just have to understand the commitments at first.

Anyway, good luck! :)
