I like to send a relevant photo of a similar product when I send out a quote, but photographing printed detail in small items and getting a professsional result was causing a lot of pain until I read this article:
How to Make An Inexpensive Light Tent - DIY

It explains how to do product shots using a light tent.

I made the gadget using a cardboard box and was amazed at the results, them bought a £12 light tent from EBay.

Perhaps the most important thing was learning about the 'white balance' setting on my camera (or mobile phone) setting the light source to flourescent or incandescent depending on what light is available makes a huge difference.
