Open source social network

I'm looking for a social network platform which will provide all the features of Ning but can be more easily customised and tweaked.

I'm guessing I'll end up going for something open source like Buddypress for Wordpress MU: BuddyPress.org

Any other suggestions SBFers?

Drupal is a great platform for building social networking apps. It's well supported, has plenty of proven plugins, comes with some great standard features (such as OpenID) and is also open source.

Once you've grasped the development process for Drupal it's a very flexible and reliable platform.

I stumbled on 'Lovd by Less' (http://www.lovdbyless.com) which is Ruby on Rails-based, but I'm not sure if it's still actively developed. Worth looking into I guess?
