So I'm faced with redundancy..... again and, at 40 year old, I feel I'm at a pivotal point in my life.

Do I stay in the industry I am currently in now (chemical) which is forever shrinking?

Do I spend money and retrain myself into a more future proof career?

Or do I set up my own business?
Something I've wanted to do for a long time, but having 2 kids, a wife and a mortgage always seems too much of a risk.

But now I might be the ideal opportunity. I'm not looking to make millions, reinvent the wheel or anything like that. Just something I can put all my effort into and something I'll enjoy.

The option I'm most passionate about is a mobile pizza van. A smart conversion of some sort. One that would look good at a wedding.

Are these still a viable option in 2021? What are the main concerns with this?
Where can you legally park and sell from these?
What are the costs attached to having it at, let's say, a retail park for the day?

My other idea is a mobile gaming truck, but the wife won't let me do that

Any advice or help would be gratefully appreciated.

Hi,

I own a mobile wood fired pizza business in West Sussex and I can honestly say it's been the best career move I ever made. I was fortunate to buy into the business as an already well established one with fully functioning pitches which I have added to so it now operates 5/7 days a week. The overheads are low, and the profit is incredible. It's well known that the mark up on pizzas is one of the best in the mobile catering industry.
All our pitches are on private land (no fees required and no licence needed) so you either pay a small fee to the land owner or as I do, pay them in pizza! We are used for weddings and parties but as my pitches are so established, I actually profit very well off those alone so although I do the events I don't actually need to search for them. They find me. Most pizza vans use a combination of wood and gas. Mine is 100% wood which gives it so much of a nicer taste. The initial buying of the business is the biggest cost but with how much it makes, it can be paid off as and when you like. You'll need to be registered with your local council and they'll give you your hygiene rating (mine is a 5) and once you've got your insurance (must include public liability etc) you're away! We've been so surprised at how easy it's been. As a takeaway, we've been able to operate during covid too. During summer I sold nearly 100 pizzas in a 3.5 hour period every pitch. In winter it's still about 60 pizzas.
Happy to offer you any further advice. But I'd say go for it. Hard work but so worth it.

No problem. You're my first post on here so I have no idea how to message privately! Look forward to hearing from you.
