merchant accounts and card processing for online shop

Hey All,

Just wondering if anybody can recommend a provider for taking credit and debit card payments online?

Starting an online shop and looking to get a good provider that isn't too expensive.

I know paypal is an option but i'm wondering about Worldpay, and sagepay options. Google checkout isn't an option as the need to have people to register to pay is an unnecessary step between a successful sale in my opinion.

The processor would have to integrate into OpenCart as well.

I thinking/hoping it will be about 200 - 300 sales a month once it's gets going but initially could be low sales.

Anybody got any thoughts?

Thanks

Tom

I'm sure some of the folk here can give you better advice than I can.

I'd only say that I wouldn't go for PayPal in your circumstances - especially if it's the only option you are offering. It's fine for people selling occasional items on eBay, but with the sort of volumes you are expecting, you could find it very expensive. It also looks a bit amateurish for a proper commercial operation like yours.

I also agree with your reason for not using Google Checkout. Anything that requires an extra level of registration - when there is no obvious benefit to the customer - is a definite turnoff.

You may want to consider the FSB's agreement with Streamline. FSB Members enjoy a very good association with Streamline's Online payment scheme. There are a number of Options open to Members, one of which is the Business Gateway 350 plan. You pay £18.50 for up to 350 transactions per month the 28 pence thereafter.

Might be worth checking out.

Thanks all for the replies/ I'm currently looking at Worldpay's £15 a month offer that they are running.

Another solution that was presented to me was Online Payment & Credit Card Processing | Secure Transactions | Merchant Account | Total Web Solutions they have a £10 a month, up to 300 transactions and then 10p a transaction after that, with 3D secure costings an addition £3 per month.

one thing that puzzles me is that they talk about forwarding your application to the bank. So does that mean you have to then pay a bank fees as well for an merchant account and then them a payment fee.

So confusing all this stuff.

but at least I think I'm getting the terminology right now :)

Thanks

They probably mean they help you with the Merchant Account application... they'll get a kick-back from it.
