Hopefully she can get back to it. Getting a book completed is something that is incredibly rewarding, so she really should try!

I have no had ANY downtime this summer at all, which is a new thing for me. I have hardly posted on here lately, but I have a lot to report back, and it's all good.

Looking very excited for me and my little business at the moment, I just hope this luck I've been having continues!

I look forward to hearing about what you have to report, it all sounds rather exciting I have to say! Oh and I agree about the book. Being in the publishing industry means that I'm constantly in contact with writers who never thought they'd be in the position of being able to publish their work, and it's wonderful to see things go to print when they've been through so many different types of struggles to get there.

We always have something to keep us busy if we have an hour or so each day where there's nobody in. Actually, it's quite rare for that to happen at the moment which is great for us, but the main issue is paperwork. We always have something that we need to catch up on, and if we don't have the free time to do it in the working day I have to work late in the evenings, so actually we often welcome a little bit of downtime.

Doing your paperwork when you don't have much else to do is such a good idea, because at the very least it means that you don't have to take it home with you. When you're in charge it's very tempting just not to switch off, to do extra hours here there and everywhere to make a few extra pounds, but if you find that you can grab that time during the working day then your work/life balance will improve a heck of a lot!

Personally, if I don't have any orders to work on I will do one of two things:

Either try out a new design that I've never done before, or even a new product entirely, or sometimes I will just make lots of generic items that I will be able to sell at coffee mornings. It is very, very rare that I have anything left over when I do this, but the great thing about it is that even if I do, I know that I can always give them away as gifts, meaning that I don't have to spend any other money on gifts, so it all works out financially really. My job is great because there is very rarely any down time, and even when there is it's very easy to deal with it.

I suppose you're in the lucky position that anything you make while you don't have much work on can still be sold to make some kind of profit. We can't do that in our business. And you actually like what you're doing, so even if you weren't being paid for it, there is a chance that you could or would be doing these things as a hobby anyway! I am quite jealous of you in that respect, but it does honestly seem like you have things sorted for yourself at the moment.

We can't really do it in ours, as such, either. But at the moment we are trying to work out some new worksheets so we are making the most out of every free second we get really, which is nice. And I do find it enjoyable anyway, I've always found creating documents to be quite a therapeutic thing to do, though I have very little idea why!
