MAC Media Sharing Scenario

Hi Guys

I'm helping out a local church and want to help them get the best out of their multimedia projects.

OK current scenario:

.mov presentations / videos created on 2 Macbooks
Once created, the finished files are sent to an external HDD
Which is then disconnected from the Mac and reconnected to a Windows laptop / projector and played on screen.

Now this system, although slightly cumbersome with the constant moving around of the external HDD, it works!

Now my proposed scenario:

All Macs / Windows machines are on the same network (both wired and wireless).

Now I was thinking of attaching a NAS box to the network.
Then Mac users can "send" their completed .mov projects to it.
Windows laptop user then pulls the files from the NAS box and plays them on screen.

Any advances on this?

Info greatly appreciated

I create and share videos on a mixed platform network and I use a NAS to store and share the source files and rendered video.

I edit locally on a Mac or PC then copy to the NAS, so I would say the only weak link in your setup would be a wireless connection to the NAS if you then copy the source files over to the NAS as an archive. If the files have come from tape they are likely to be around 12Gb per hour!

Hope that helps

Hi There

Thanks for that.

Yeah I figured the wifi LAN might prove to be a bit cumbersome but I can work around that.

MAC Video creators can be cabled into switch / router via 100 / 1000 cable as MACs / Router / Switch and NAS all in same office.

They can then send their stuff to the NAS.

Then the guy who plays it in Windows (VLC) via a wirelessly connected laptop which is in the main hall, can retreive what he needs to play and save it locally.

Or I have the option of running a CAT 5/6 cable from router to laptop as I have access above the ceiling.

Thanks again!
