Just finished my accounts to send to my accountant and I've got a sair heid. Anyone else leave things to the last minute?

Nawww... I usually leave it for a while after that.

I keep hoping that somehow the numbers will leap into place on their own... And then i get angry with myself and promise faithfully to sit down every Friday night to collate everything and keep on top of it....

Never happens :001_rolleyes:

I am a tax return hand delivered to the tax office at 6pm on the 31st of January - kind of a gal!

Glad to know it's just not me then. I'm always full of good intentions to keep things up to date as I go along but it never happens. And yes, I'm still using 's spreadsheet. My Accountant loves it!

I usually keep on top of my accounts on a monthly basis so the end of year accounts is generally easy, but for some reason I have been neglecting the monthly accounts and I have already got my self a bit confused, and now I need to go investigate what I have done wrong. Thank goodness its only a wee hobby business cause Id be in trouble if this was a major company...lol

If anyone else wants a copy of the spreadsheet Brian and Alison mentioned I am more than happy to email you a copy and offer some free support on it to get you started.

Likewise any accounting related queries I am here to offer advice where I can :) There's also a few others on here like Gouldie who i'm sure could help out a few people if needed.

That is one well travelled and used spreadsheet, . :D

I should probably consider something like KashFlow but have never quite got round to doing more than thinking about it.

I think we need to show you how sexy Microsoft Accounting really is ;) And free ;)

I use VT, its just a spreadsheet macro, it has a simple cash book function, and then expands into a fuller accounting type package.

Used to use MYOB, moved over to VT when MYOB pulled plug, and haven't looked back, did last quarters accounts in about 1/2 time it takes with MYOB.

Highly recommend.

Microsoft Office Accounting does look great (especially the free version).

We're in the process of migrating from Sage Line 50 to Office Accounting just now, and though there's been a few hoops to go through it wasn't as painful as I'd expected.

Only real pain is that you have to go through and re-run all previous VAT returns.

I have a client and his previous bookkeeper advised him to switch from Microsoft Accounting to Sage Line 50. Needless to say when the going got tough she dissappeared, i managed to sort it all out and he's a lot happier now.

I would also recommend VT, a brilliant tool to assist any small business with staying on top of their accounts.

This seems to be a common approach Brian, i certainly don't think you'll be alone in leaving your accounts to the last minute. At least you got there though, i've had to help no end of businesses out of tight situations with companies house.

I just try to highlight how much more the smoothly the process flows if you can stay on top of your paperwork. Even if you only batch it by month etc. at least it's in some sort of order for you to start.

Just remember be disciplined, once you get into a routine of doing it you'll have no problems ........... and headaches.

Thanks for the mention , i would be more than happy to help anyone on the site setup there accounts or answer any questions. All complimentary to fellow SBF'ers

Would you be able to pass me on a copy of your spreadsheet, i find these great to hand out to encourage small businesses to stay on top of things.

If anyone is interested, i have setup a new group called number crunchers, feel free to join and fire over any questions etc.

Kind Regards

Neil

That makes me feel slightly better as I do batch things by month, it's just that the months have a habit of flying by without anything being done with said batches.

In a previous business I used to hand over a cardboard box of invoices and receipts to a very tolerant accountant at the end of the year, but I have improved a bit since then. ;)

I bet he loved that, he would have seen the pound signs. Just remember, not many accountants will keep there overheads down to pass on the savings to the customer.

The more you can do, the cheaper it should be. Obviously they'll check your work for any errors and bill you for having to complete any adjustments ;)

Cheers

Neil

We use VT. I am trying to convince my business partner to switch over to Kashflow, so I can integrate it with our website. We need to use VT from several locations, I've solved that by getting everyone involved to install Dropbox, which has proved a success.

Can I get a copy of the spreadsheet too please?! Might be of use for some new ventures!

Hi

Could I have a copy of your spreadsheet too please? I have my own which I set up but would like to compare and improve mine. As I will be using it for my own clients, I am willing to pay you for it.

I'm new here and loving all the info! Thanks everyone. My questions about business banking, business credit cards, international currencies have all been answered

I keep a simple income/expenditure cashbook and it seems to work fine.

Strangely, I enjoy doing my accounts - I must be an oddball :001_rolleyes:

Hi Jo,

I always recommend that business owners get involved with there accounts, they more than anyone else need to understand how the business is performing.

If you have any questions just give me a shout.
