Is this legal?

I have had a longstanding problem on a certain retailer's web site where it does not allow me to log in through the "Log In" link. Bizarrely, the only way I can log in is by clicking on a link provided in a Forgotten Password email - even though it's the same login and password.

Tonight I was attempting to order an item. I put it in my cart, went to log in, and the login was rejected as usual. I had to open up a new tab, pull up that Forgotten Password email, and log in through that. I then went to put the item in my cart and...in that literal minute, the price had gone up from £35 to £42.

I played around with different browsers and tabs and incredibly, that's how it is. If I am not logged in the item is £35, if I am logged in it's £42.

Surely this can't be permissible? It's crap business practice in any case and they've definitely received my last order.

I don't know if it is legal or not to be honest... companies are normally free to offer promotions to new customers, so maybe it's legal after all...

Exactly! Personally I'd write to them and tell them this. You don't state if the retailer is in your niche or not - if they are you could always do a blog post on it and pick up some of their traffic ;)
