In August 2012, all apprenticeships will have to last a minimum of 12 months, which means apprenticeships that take only around 3-12 months will be scrapped.
I personally can see the pros and cons. It means that youngsters have more of a secured job (which is one of the reasons they have introduced it). However, it also means that you can't quickly do an apprenticeship programme, get the qualification and start your proper job role without having the apprenticeship wage.
I suppose they're only doing it to benefit both companies and apprentices in the long run
