How Do You Keep Yourself Motivated?

As we all know, a HUGE part of being able to develop as a person rather than simply as a business is being able to set goals and stick to them. Anyone who's ever made a goal will understand that it is something that motivates you hugely at the beginning, but then towards then end you might find that your motivation lowers and because of this you don't reach your goal. In business, this is something that could indicate the end of your success - so what do you do to avoid it from happening?

One thing that I do, which might be a little bit strange, is record a video of myself explaining why I want to achieve something, what it means to me, and how it could improve my future to do so. I find that when times get tough, watching these videos back can help me to get back into things again.

The more emotive the better - the stronger the feelings, the more likely it it that it's going to work!

How about you? What do you do when you feel as though motivation is passing you by?

I like the idea of recording a video Gemma. Not only will it be useful to look back on but it will also help strengthen your goals in your mind by saying them out loud.

I live off to do lists and these also keep me motivated as I tick things off. Frequently speaking to other people about what I'm doing and why also helps. I also find that tea helps keep me massively motivated ;)

That's something I have to avoid! I've just spent the last two years losing 10 stone so don't want to go back there again!!

That's a good effort, congrats! I think I might have gained two stones in the last two weeks.

The fear of going back into employment motivates me. I'd rather England win the world cup than have to go ba....well nah I wouldn't go that far.

I'm rubbish at lists :(

With SBF I just keep telling myself i'm doing the right thing, just keep plugging away and hopefully it reaches a tipping point. I do enjoy it as well though and that's always good for motivation :)

It pales in comparison to what you've done Gemma that's a brilliant achievement.

Enjoyment is key, definitely. And this is a great resource so I'm sure it will continue to grow!

I have a wall of photos of the kids we teach, when they've been performing at concerts etc. There are copies of exam certificates, most of which were passed with flying colours, and copies of letters of thanks from parents. I only have to look at those when I feel times are getting hard, and it gives me the motivation to get back on track and get going again.

Wall of Fame? :D. That is awesome. I wish I could do that but there's nothing I could use in my job really!

Celebrating success and self care time keeps me going.

With work we can be so focused and determined to succeed. It can mean lots of struggles, but the rewards are worth it. At times when I don't feel motivated I focus on the positives, remind myself of how far I've come, and also take the time to rest, recuperate, do things I enjoy and ensure I can come back to work motivated with a fresh fire in my belly!

Hello Gemma Rowlands,
Taking time to rediscover oneself is necessary; you might need a break, while also avoiding futile efforts. We are only enthusiastic when we feel we are doing the right thing; validate this by searching within yourself. When you find the answer early, you regain motivation sooner. Your video-making style is a good suggestion, but in my opinion, it will truly work effectively when what you proclaim in the video or your goals, and the reasons for pursuing those goals, are consistently aligned with both the present and future, as motivation often wanes due to our varying states at different stages, and the significance and meaning of the issue to us will change. Consistency regarding the importance of that goal is crucial.

When I don't want to do anything I just start to do this automatically. If I do sth for two minutes, there's a possibility my motivation comes back.
