How Creative Are You At Networking and Promoting Your Business/Brand?

I own and run the POWER LUNCH CLUB (PLC),a business networking organisation. One of the aspects about it that I am very proud of has been its name, or as it affectionately known, ‘The PLC’. How often do you see those initials about the place? Royal Bank of Scotland PLC, Abbey National PLC; I am sure you have seen and know of lots more. I was very excited when I saw those initials together and I had an overwhelming sensation at the time that I had got the brand/name right!!

Of course having a good brand/name is only one part of the way in which any business promotes itself and this got me thinking. Networking is about relationship building, and making sure that people and businesses appreciate and like you and your company enough to want to do business together. The first stage is of course your company name. But read on and hold that though inside your head for just now.

At the moment, we are living in uncertain economic times and businesses need to be more and more creative in their methods of marketing and networking to ensure that they stand out in the crowd. After all as someone once said, ‘If you do what everyone else is doing, you will get what everyone else gets’.

Being creative or different is of value if you ensure your clients receive the best possible service or products from you. If you fail to understand that concept, the brand will be damaged along with your reputation.

When you go to networking events, you always hope that people will respond to your carefully chosen business name and instantly want to do business with you, am I right? Well if only it does happen that way, it would be nice. What really happens is that most people go into a planned rehearsed speech; about their products and why they are different (as most business try to say this, they instantly aren’t any different from each other). But of course you need us to be a little more creative to stand out in the crowd and get people coming to you rather than putting up the barriers against your sales talk!!

People like to do business with people they know, and one of the best things you can do at a network event, is not talk about your business!! WHAT!! I mean it, if you can make yourself more of a real person, rather than someone who is there to promote their own products or services, you will find that people will respond better and start to ask you more about yourself and which then naturally leads on to asking about your business, because they genuinely want to know. And that is then the type of person someone likes to do business with; someone they know and warm too!!

So at networking events, talk about yourself, your hobbies, your family, tell a few funny, good clean jokes, be more of yourself, the person and develop an attractive personality, rather than getting your sales pitch out. Trust me, it works and it will do your brand the power of good.

Kind regards

Gordon, age 42, wife called Ramona, a Senior Midwife, my son Robert age 4…who is loved to bits…and the smartest boy in the world. We love going on steam trains together as often as we can. I like coffee, and fine malt whiskies. I live in Leith and weigh far too much…I have a background in accountancy and management…my real passion is not making money, but helping businesses in anyway I can…so how can I help you?

Thank you Gordon for those tips. I shall certainly keep them in mind. It is always good to get advice on networking and even interacting with people.

Having spent 20+ years on a remote estate in the Highlands hardly speaking to a soul (apart from my husband),I need plenty of encouragement!

Networking can certainly be daunting experience for certain people. One of the main reasons for SBF was to try and break down those barriers. Walking into a networking event having already made contact and interacted with people online suddenly makes the experience a whole lot more enjoyable. When I started in business a few years back networking actually terrified me and i've been the only one in the room who no one was talking to :(

Gordon makes some great points and I think it's also worth mentioning that sometimes just listening can work. What he mentions is also relevant to how you should act in an online environment. It's not all about shoving a sales message down peoples throat. Interacting with discussions and sharing opinions actually help people to form an opinion on you as a person.

Good morning Theresia, thanks for the reply...and hey we now know a little about you...you are married and live on a remote highland estate. You have now differentiated yourself from other VA's

I for one would like to know, is it great living in a such a remote place? Imagine all the peace and quiet, allowing you to get things done. It can be really hectic here in Edinburgh.

Kind regards

Gordon

You don't still live on a remote Highland Estate do you Theresia? That would certainly differentiate you from other VA's.

No, we don't live on a remote Highland estate any longer. We live just outside of Forfar in beautiful Angus. No more midgies, too much rain, getting snowed in, no water in winter, no more 2 hour round trip just to go shopping, no more getting stuck in snow drifts and having to walk 6 miles in either direction just to get help. Oh but I miss it!

Seriously, it was fun and interesting when we were younger (and we have got a lot of stories to tell) but we are enjoying "normal" living now.

I agree Gordon, Edinburgh was hectic even when we used to work there, I definitely wouldn't like to be working there now.

I agree wholeheartedly.
I've been to lots of networking events and some people might as well bring a long a recording and just press the play button. I can think of one particular person in particular who I have met loads of times and I don't think he has ever asked me a question about my business.

If I'm guilty of anything it's the opposite. I'm a naturally curious (OK nosy) person and I love finding out what people do -in fact that was my job for 20 yrs -to quiz people about their businesses . I can spend so much time finding out all about your business that I don't get a chance to mention my own. Did it again this morning. An hour's meeting -55mins on the other business with a bit about fundraising -5mins on mine as we ran out of time.

But never mind - I'm sure we'll meet up again -and if anyone's interested it's a really good first aid traing business.

Oh I know...probably because they have been trained to say something in the hope that it sticks in someone head....

Where as relaxing and being yourself...will naturally open doors (people being receptive to you) and to more business, because they like and know you.

Re: How Creative Are You At Networking and Promoting Your Busines

My first networking event was a disaster...I was withdrawn, nervous, couldn't hold a conversation and made daft small talk. I couldn't run out of there fast enough and had an early glass of wine that evening.

BUT, in a way, I had to have that disaster to learn from my mistakes. I now LOVE networking events, love interacting with people, and genuinely love hearing about their businesses.

I have an odd strategy: I don't go to networking events to get business. I go to meet people and be myself, and if I happen to get business as a result, all the better.

Heather, great post, thanks for this...

My first networking event was a disaster...I was withdrawn, nervous, couldn't hold a conversation and made daft small talk. I couldn't run out of there fast enough and had an early glass of wine that evening.

And such a common story....they you hear, 'Ach It wasn't for me'...or I don't do networking.'

BUT, in a way, I had to have that disaster to learn from my mistakes. I now LOVE networking events, love interacting with people, and genuinely love hearing about their businesses.

I was reminded of a great quote when I read that....

"I learn't so much from my mistakes; that I decided to make some more!"

You perservered and got the results you were looking for.

I have an odd strategy: I don't go to networking events to get business. I go to meet people and be myself, and if I happen to get business as a result, all the better.

You don't have an odd strategy, you have the right strategy.

Thanks again,

Kind regards

Bang on Gordon. People buy from people. Names, logo's, straplines, etc are all well and good, but at events it is the people that count 100 times out of a hundred.

Re: How Creative Are You At Networking and Promoting Your Busines

I have got an interesting book on the shelf. It's title is "And Death Came Third". There was a survey done about peoples greatest fears and in order they are 1. Public Speaking 2. Walking into a room of strangers (networking) and Death.

Gordon makes some great points and after 20 years in sales and marketing I am quite comfortable with public speaking and networking. This has been through many years of aversion therapy ;)

I think I mentioned in another post: To be interesting when you are networking you must be interested in the other person. The more you find out the more you make a connection. Remember someone has to get to know you and then trust you and then eventually they might buy form you. It all takes time. Networking events should never be about selling.

It is about building relationships so they will want to see you again and allow you to make a presentation. If you turn them of on the first "date" you might as well forget ever getting business in the future.

I have taken quite a few people to their first networking event and they have been almost scared witless. The thing that has always impressed me is how on the way home they are totally buzzing and go on about how silly it was to be anxious before the event and when can they do another one again.

One other benefit is for people who work mainly on their own it is a great way to socialise with other business people and get out of the office.

Have fun and enjoy it. I have never been to a networking event that is not fun.

This has been brought to you by a hill running Carnegie Harrier, Martial Artist, SCUBA diving, Linguist, Salesman and Marketer who is married to a wonderful Persian, marathon running Business Director and have two rugby playing, running, SCUBA diving and gymnastic sons who love to play computer games, Wii and PS3. As a family we love life and do loads. Our friends next door nickname us the "Yogurt Family"

My favourite definition of networking is "making new friends".

At one of my first events I was feeling rather out on a limb and awkward. I decided to get all coachy with myself and see what I saw. I realised that, more than anything else, I was behaving like I was 14 again and at a school disco. So I decided to approach it like a party! Suddenly it became a lot more fun. I seemed to connect with people a lot better too.

No. I broke out in zits and pretended I just wasn't interested in grooving.

And thank you VERY much for the Vanilla Ice reference. You were out by at least five years, in the wrong direction - he was well after my time! Donna Summer would be much closer to the mark.

Note to self: always attend networking events with "I Feel Love" playing on the iPod.

She is a fine old lady now, still a nervous dog though even after all those years. One of our other dogs is pretty ill though. Down at Edinburgh Vet hospital tomorrow again with him.

Hope all is well with you. I use VA's several times a year when I have too much on, or when I have to many projects on the go.
