How Big Does A Business Have To Be Before They Have Dedicated It Staff?

I've worked in IT before, but these were all for IT companies themselves. What I'm wondering is how big a company would have to be before they have their own permanent dedicated IT staff?

I think you're looking at a turnover of at least £5m. My uncle's business turns over £2m/year and employs about 10 people, and they don't need dedicated IT staff. They hire a freelancer to come in if something breaks, which is far more economical than an IT team that spend the majority of their time playing games.

I know this all too well :) It's not my fault that nothing ever broke!

I think that sounds about right. I worked at a company with turnover of £3.4 million, and we had a team of 3 IT staff, most of the time doing nothing.

It's interesting to hear about your uncle's business model. For smaller businesses with a turnover of £2m, outsourcing IT needs to freelancers on an as-needed basis can indeed be a cost-effective approach
